New album coming soon

From Brilliant Trees through Died In The Wool...

Right. There's been some talk about who is on this record, how about screwing our minds about who's not on it: Steve Jansen. Where is he? I haven't read his name on any news about Manafon. Surely, if he's not on it, there's a meaning, musically speaking.

It surely appears as though Jansen was not involved with this solo album - though obviously, there is still a possibility that he could have made some sort of contribution that just hasn't been noted as of yet.
Please keep in mind that basic tracks for this project were actually started in 2004 and supposedly preliminary recording was completed around late 2007...and during much of that time, Jansen was primarily focused on the recordings which became Snow Borne Sorrow and Slope.
Sylvian's main intent seems to have been to work with certain musicians affiliated with Erstwhile Records and so the only confirmed drummer/percussionist so far has been Martin Brandlmayr. There may be others, and Jansen may be among them. We shall have to wait and find out. This anticipation is grueling, is it not?

Small Metal Gods

Postby Simonp on Fri Apr 10, 2009 3:22 am

From Davidsylvian.net

It appears the first single is entitled "Small Metal Gods"

"Manafon is about to be released this summer and what I've heard of it, it must be breath taking! The rumour of the video seems to be true.

David himself describes it as:

a completely modern kind of chamber music. Intimate, dynamic, emotive, democratic, economical.

It's almost certain that the following contributers will be included on the final cut: Keith Rowe, Sachiko Matsubara, Evan Parker, Christian Fennesz, members of Polwechsel, Otomo Yoshihide and John Tilbury.

From good sources it is told that there are no percussionists! The basic arrangement is an improvised backdrop with spare overdubs supporting Sylvian’s voice. Lyrical themes concern the loss of faith, life as a quixotic and isolated individuals and creativity"

NO PERCUSSIONISTS?????

NO PERCUSSIONISTS?????

Yes indeed, unfortunately, no percussionists. Drummer/Percussionist Martin Brandlmayr is a member of Polwechsel and it had been confirmed more than a year ago that he did take part in a few sessions with Sylvian - at least we have had the opportunity to hear 'Sleepwalkers' which was a part of those sessions including Brandlmayr/Sachiko Matsubara/Toshimaru Nakamura.
But now the fact is evident that Sylvian opted for no percussion on this cd (unless you count piano - which is technically listed as a percussion instrument :) ). Being a drummer myself, the lack of any drums or percussion is somewhat disappointing to me, but interesting as well. Yet I was really counting on hearing more contributions from Brandlmayr. I think others here on this forum also commented on how interesting his unique style sounded on 'Sleepwalkers'.
Just for the record, that info you posted from davidsylvian.net was actually taken from two posts I put here on this forum on the Manafon Yes / Manafon No thread. I predicted that davidsylvian.net would swipe it up in no time, which they did, and I have no problem with that. I actually like being listed as a 'good source' - though, as I had explained on the other thread, I received this info from the gentleman writing the official press release for Manafon. He is a great source. He has a copy of Manafon in his possession and has been listening to it for nearly a month now.

Sorry Baht, I hadn't realised you had already posted this information. I just noticed it on ds.net and quickly posted it on here. I'm quite surprised there will not be percussion on the album. It makes the release all the more intriguing.

No reason to be sorry. As I wrote in my other post, I am disappointed about the lack of drums or percussion but you are correct - it should be interesting and these particular descriptions are especially appealing:

>>>The basic arrangement is improvised backdrop with spare overdubs supporting Sylvian’s singing, and the basic setup won’t surprise anyone who’s heard, say, his track on that Fennesz album, but I find it even more engrossing. Lyrical themes concern the loss of faith, life as a quixotic, isolated individual, and creativity.<<<

>>>David himself describes it as:
a completely modern kind of chamber music. Intimate, dynamic, emotive, democratic, economical.<<<

NO PERCUSSIONISTS?!

What a pity. I guess it's as I feared, but I'm still waiting and excited
about this new album.

By the way, anyone know where I can listen to this Sleepwalkers track
I've been reading about on this forum? I've searched and searched but
haven't found anything. Can anyone help?!

It was on the World Is Everything tour book cd. Samadhisound had it but it's sold out.

Oh my, I hadn't even thought of that.
I'm listening to this, and I'm liking it. Sounds very similar to blemish.

Is everyone in the consensus here that this track is a good example of how the new album will sound like?

One assumes that Sleepwalkers and The World Is Everything, will both be on the new album, what with neither featuring percussion.
I like both pieces, but they`re not A Fire In the Forest or Snow Bourne Sorrow are they ???

Anyways, this fantastic journey continues, JAPAN re-union on hold for a year or so :D

Actually, I've had confirmation that the song "Sleepwalkers" will not be on Manafon - and that track happens to feature much percussion : vibraphone, marimba, and drum set all performed by co-composer Martin Brandlmayr. "The World Is Everything" shall not be included on the new cd either.
Manafon will include 9 new tracks.

I happen to think that The World Is Everything is a beautiful piece of music and if the album sounded like that then I'd be more than happy. Obviously its not going to but nothing wrong with dreaming.
