Came across a book I thought some photography/80s fans might be interested in. It's Patrick McMullan's "so80s" - a pictorial diary of the club scene in New York during the 80s. Great pics that include Nick Rhodes, Andy Warhol, Madonna, River Phoenix, Grace Jones, Debbie Harry, David Hockney, Jeremy Irons, Perry Ellis, Lisa Robinson, Robert Mapplethorpe...pretty much you name the celebrity and they're here, club regulars and lots of pretty bar boys. I found a stack of them on the bargain table at Barnes and Noble, $19 - worth it.

This sounds fabulous, thank you! Are there any photos from Danceteria, Hurrah and The Mudd Club, I wonder? We used to frequent those places especially back in the day.

I'll visit B&N tomorrow; thanks again for mentioning this!

Oh, and I recently finished reading "The Brooklyn Follies" by Paul Auster -- it made me laugh and cry, sometimes simultaneously. So brilliant and so very recommended!

There are photos from Danceteria, quite a few, including ones with Nina Hagen, Way Bandy, Steven Miesel and Cookie Mueller. I don't think there are ones from the other places. The majority are from Area, Limelight and Palladium.

The last good book I read was "The Unicorn" by Iris Murdoch, read that for a LiveJournal book club, finished it last week. I'd never read anything by her and liked it a lot - people acting out on emotional whims with confused motives, people living their lives in certain ways for which the motives appear crazy but which are true to their characters once their secrets are known; I found it very believable.

Finished a light read last night, "Shameless" by Paul Burston. It relied too much on humor to carry it along and not enough on plot. Humor wears very thin if you can't care about the characters.

I read a lot. I go through at least 2 or 3 books per week. I end up re-reading most of my books. Currently, I have nothing to read so I've been reading "The Last Romantic" again.

I'm reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova which is compelling (it's a thriller based on Bram Stoker's Dracula). After that I will probably read agin the last 2 Harry Potter books as I read them both on the day I bought them and don't remember much about either!

Which one is it? 'Edie: An American Biography' by Jean Stein is a good read if you haven't checked it out...it was my first real introduction ot Edie years ago and I have been a huge and loyal Edie devotee ever since.

Right now I am reading 'Killing Yourself To Live' by Chuck Klosterman, and it's much better than the title may indicate. :-)

RIP, Kurt Vonnegut.
