Guess what I'm doing?

Postby krausy on Fri Oct 20, 2006 10:39 pm

Tomorrow I am running this race:

www.neuseriverbridgerun.com

and putting myself through pure torture because I have already paid my money and now I find out that I can't wear a headset-----the jerks!!!!

I would much rather hear David's voice in my ears than my labored breathing and the runners around me....................this blows!!!!!
Prayers would be nice right now----I've never run ANYTHING, (or in this case, 6 miles, with no music)

I'm toast. :?

Nah, you'll do fine (with the help of some Advil!). Running can be addictive, I did it quite a lot for a few years and would love to get back into it again. A few tips I learned along the way:

1) Take Glucosamine Chondritin regularly, to help lubricate the cartilege.

2) Climb stairs as much as possible. That'll strengthen the muscles you'll need for long-distance running.

3) Breakfast is good! I go with half carbs, half fruits -- your body will *slowly* turn these into sugar for energy. Avoid excessively sweet stuff like orange juice. They'll metabolize quickly, so you'll get a burst of energy, then you'll crash!

4) If you start to feel pain that doesn't feel like normal aching muscles, STOP! You might be doing some damage that'll take a long time to heal.

5) Enjoy! It really is fun, regardless of how well you do or whether or not you cross the finish line.

Hope it all went well :D

GOOD LUCK KRAUSY!!

6 miles is a lot!! But judging from other posts you have made about running, I'm sure you'll do fine!

Have fun!

Okay, that race was sooooo cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finished in 1:01:35 and the breakdown of my miles went something like this:

mile 1 9:43
mile 2 19:25
mile 3 29:29
mile 4 39:55
mile 5 49:40
mile 6 1:01
add the last two tenths/mile makes 1:01:35.

that is roughly a ten minute mile so I am very pleased with that. I also never stopped to walk, never even thought about it, which is great because that gives me confidence for my first half-marthon next month!!

It was sooo cool---we were running on major highway overpasses, etc and it amazed me how much area we covered in that six miles!! I am definitely doing this race again next year!!

Thanks for all of your well-wishes---mwah!!

oh, and by the way, I saw about five people with headsets, and I had one too, tucked away(hee hee) but I only used one earphone so I could hear music in one ear and traffic in the other

So glad it went well, Krausy! So six miles this month, 13.1 next month, then maybe the full marathon is on your horizon? (Heck, even I never got that crazy!)

The only thing that sucks about training where you are (i.e. near sea-level) is that you're always gonna get beat by some Kenyan who's been training on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. I made the mistake of training in Michigan and running two half-marathons in Colorado. I still crossed the finish line, but I was gasping for breath!

Do keep us informed, Krausy... you might even inspire me to slip on my Mizuno's again! :D

Ha ha, glad it went well! And good luck with your half marathon. :)

I used to run but I'm too busy with classes now to even think about it, and I have pretty bad knees, which my doctor pointed out that it was probably because of my horribly flat feet. So one day I'll suck it up and go buy some custom-made running shoes...
