Excellent opportunity - good for your friend and for us as well. :)

I do not have any specific questions in regards to Manafon, since the material speaks well enough for itself - but along similar lines, perhaps this journalist could ask if Sylvian plans on releasing the audio for the recent project When We Return You Won't Recognise Us?
Thanks.

- Who does your hair?

- Does the phrase "Plenty more fish in the sea" sound familiar?

- 'Blemish'...you is 'avin' a laugh, innit?

- Really, who does your hair?

- This is Neonico's phone number and address...is there any chance you could put the poor girl out of her misery?

- So do you do your own hair, then?

That lot should get him thinking.

Oh Phil, now that was a bit mean to say the least! No wonder Neonico has abandoned the forum with comments like that...she'll probably never come back now..and to be honest I kind of miss her - I found her posts always made me chuckle...

I wasn't being mean, Beck...I was trying to coax Neo out of hiding by making her laugh.

Hey, I think perhaps you should start off a whole new thread dedicated to this...this Manafon thread is getting very long (we're already up to page 24!)...and this wonderous news might get a bit lost in here! :D

The WIre review is out, and oh boy they didn't like Manafon. So do I...
They put in a more articulate way what I thought of the snippets, basically: that it all sounds the same and that David's voice seems to sing the same song all the way through.

What's your thoughts?

By collaborating with the innovative artists who work within the field of Electro-Acoustic Improvisation, Sylvian obviously intended to challenge himself and in turn, challenge his audience. These improvisors prefer to remain free from rigid structure and refrain from any adherence to strict tempo. And the initial listen to such an experimental approach may give one pause...especially if the listener dares to bring his or her own preconceptions. Yet as the seemingly discordant relationship between vocal and instruments becomes less unsettling, the textural beauty of each individual track is made vividly apparent.
Sylvian's voice is front and center, confidently evincing more melody than that on previously recent releases - possibly due to the freedom afforded him by the openended nature of the accompaniment. And yet, I have no doubt that other commentators will miss this aspect and instead make heavy mention of the minimalistic instrumentation on this release. But the music on this cd is not nearly as stark nor as barren in the manner which has been portrayed in advance notices. In my opinion, the contributions from both pianist John Tilbury and saxophonist Evan Parker are absolutely stunning and allow the listener to focus on solid instrumentation at an equal level with Sylvian's vocal. Cellist Marcio Mattos' contributions are beguiling...at one moment, soothing - the next moment, harsh. The plucking, scraping and striking sounds produced by bassist Werner Dafeldecker and cellist Michael Moser give greater dynamic to the sessions they took part in. The concept of guitar playing is taken to another extreme on this cd - indeed, there exists conventional acoustic guitar, provided wonderfully by Sylvian on a couple of tracks and, to a lesser degree, Burkhard Stangl. But elsewhere, the unique stylings of Derek Bailey are properly paid tribute to by Yoshihide and Akiyama, while Keith Rowe provides sound (high and low pitched hums, drones, oscillations and piercing tones) that does not seem capable of originating from an electric guitar.
I'm intrigued by the lyrical concepts, and greatly appreciative that Sylvian has decided to focus more on character studies rather than producing more personal reflections. 125 Spheres is the only track that I have any sort of negative feeling toward, but being it is so short, it is easy to neglect.
There will no doubt be many comparisons and contrasts put forth by other reviewers, but if allowed to stand on its own, "Manafon" makes for a satisfying listen, and is clearly a strong testament to Sylvian's ability to successfully integrate his unique sound with radical musical styles.

I don't really think there's much integration, I think Penman is dead on about that. that's not exactly a criticism, but integration clearly wasn't what Sylvian was going for on this disc.

OK, so I've listened to it twice since receiving it in the post this morning.

Perhaps the alternate title for this should have been "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Slashing Your Own Wrists, But Were Too Afraid To Ask".

I was mildly encouraged by "Small Metal Gods", but it was all downhill after that.

I like improv - I have some reet weird crap in my collection which makes me no stranger to an ensemble improvising (Carla Bley's band at full-throttle, for instance, sounds like a mass nervous breakdown), but the improv here is unimaginative, lazy and dull. I can almost feel the session players' boredom. Did someone say that Sylvian used the Bob Fripp model and that all of the session guys played for free? It certainly sounds like it, too.

Seems like the old adage of "you get what you pay for" has never been more accurate.

It's probably about time for the usual caveat; I love the vast majority of Sylvian's work - he's one of my favourite artists and his music is why I bother coming here. He's rarely, if ever, been one to use his music to raise a smile with the listener...I know and accept that as a major part of his approach. But dear God..."Manafon" makes Bartok sound like The Bay City Rollers.

All around the house tonight, there's been the steady "thwack" sound of mice throwing themselves onto the traps.

For weeks and months, I've fought back the the demon at the back of my mind who, when the words "challenging" and "uncompromising" were bandied about in relation to the new album, whispered nought but "It's 'Blemish MkII', Lawton...don't buy it..." over and over.

The completist in me would have had me buy it anyway.

And hey...the artwork is nice.

where is this interview going to be published?

Online. Wales Today or something. More details later. Journalist friend would like to ask him questions but fell off the Sylvian wagon a while ago and wants to be to speed.

Phil, I had a gut feeling you would have a hard time with the album, and you did approach it with an open mind, so there you go. I am sure it is not for everyone, and I will not argue with your own take on it. I have yet to hear it, hope to be quietly slitting my wrists to Manafan by Friday evening. (Actually, personally, I will be surprised if I don't appreciate it, myself.)

Anyway, I am really only responding to your post because of the following, which gave me a wonderful, healthy, life affirming laugh over my morning coffee.

Cheers!
