I used to be friends with a girl who worshipped the Carpenters and tried to convince me that Sylvian had copied their music. I was at a total loss to explain this. Also the number of Bazz Manilow fans that would cite him and Sylvian in the same breath. People are strange, Tin Bird.

Yeh, I know..it's a sticky topic though...beleieve me in my day I have been accussed of being a music snob! So, I try to be aware of others feelings on the matter...it's just that there are times when it is hard to bite the tongue. ;-)

Burial is rather good. Does this make me a chav? I like Max Richter too. I still prefer to absorb music rather than listen to it. :smt004 :smt004

No, Burial is great! Good stuff! Absorb vs listen..hmmm...not exactly sure what you mean, other than to say that taking in music for me is a multi-sensory, all encompassing experience...I believe I absorb and listen...perhaps music that I'm unable to absorb (like Ozzy) is the kind of stuff I turn off?

I absorb the good music and hear/listen to the other stuff. Absorption meaning taking it into me on a way deeper level than maybe the artist even intended. It becomes part of a soundtrack to your mind's eye. Memories can be found with certain music. It opens up a level of consciousness maybe out of reach when merely listening/hearing. Of course this kind of talk merely makes one a target for ridicule from certain sickos. Trailing vapor or whoever.

How can I like Sylvian and Ozzy at the same time? Simple really...I enjoy the entire pop/rock/metal genres and what I listen to varies from day to day, depending on my mood and what's going on in my life that day. Some days I like something soothing to ease the stress, and other days I'm ready to rock out. I just became a Sylvian fan a few years back, but I've been an Ozzy/Sabbath fan since the first time I heard "Master of Reality" in the 70's. It's all good! :D

No Burial is way too deep for the chavs to get into. Not that i know exactly what they listen to but i know that Burial is not catchy and immediate and therefore beyond their (fake) Burberry capped little brains. Check out The Wire interview with Burial. Struck a real chord with me, he loves the sadness in the old jungle choons. Don'k know if the DJ Kicks thing was a hoax but i cant wait for the next installment.

I am so happy you like Burial. I love the melancholy sounding vocals that are played with. Not dance music as such and not exactly music you lay on the floor to either. I would love a Burial remix of some of Sylvian's work. His remix of Jamie Woon was tremendous. I got the Wire with the Burial interview and really hope the new stuff goes on and beyond the work he did already. I love it when musicians push it to the limits of the unfamiliar familiar. :smt004

It's a form of dance music, it's also so hauntingly beautiful with a tinge of urban sadness. Those two albums would be up there in my top 20 faves of all time. They're that good in my opinion. Perhaps we should start a new thread "what Sylvian track would you most like Burial to remix" ? Tough one that.

I wish they would do a record together. Is that too crazy a hope? As for a remix..."Weathered Wall" or "Cries and Whispers". You need something with a beat for an anchor and then that otherworldly synth treatment over it. And he would need to mess up Syl's voice but leave it like we like it. I feel giddy......

I knew I would like Untrue as soon as I heard the David Lynch sample at the start.
Ghosts is great to remix live with 3 turntables (2 1210s and 1 standard Kenwood) , I've been doing that ever since I picked up the Tin Drum LP in Oxfam for £1.
I know any kid with a comp can 'mash' things using the compute to find the right pitch etc for them but I prefer the old school ways, more fun and more skillful.
I also use the same magic on OMD's new stone age.

Perhaps Burial is lurking on the board and will whip up a remix for us :-D
