To me, that's really the point. I don't care if someone wants to have a pretentious (for lack of better/right word) discussion, or gets all technical about some musical aspect and theory; can be funny and can be interesting. But putting others down and making them feel small, that to me is a very low thing to do, only shows the shallowness of the person doing it.

As long as things are friendly and people don't lose sight of the fact that we're all fans who would like to communicate with each other, I'll enjoy any discussion.

Indeed Kera. Im glad I found our little group - it puts the fun back into it...

I guess a theory about the pretentious stuff is that this sort of music attracts that sort of 'critic' if you will - BECAUSE of its 'arty' nature. But that's only part of the picture IMO. As Gods said the point of art and music is to communicate and inspire. You can dissect the fun out of something.

Yes I do admit I love trying to hear the different parts in a song and wonder how Rich did his keyboard programming or how Mick does his basslines or what filters/gizmos they all use. But the primary thing is the enjoyment of the sound that ensues from all this effort.

And that is the magic of music that no-one can quantify.

I do that too. I've studied music for so many years I can't help doing it! But it's a nice thing to do. Understand music from the inside is one of the most amazing things in the world!! But I'm not gonna punish anybody for not doing it. Music is art, but art , among many other things, is entertainment!!! And everyone has its way of enjoy things. It's something too subjetive and personal to tell somebody how to do it.

I agree... I mean i'm not opposed to discussing musical structure but when your not a musician it can get to be a bit much. Just like if I began dissecting photos from the inside out... it can make some people feel bad and other people just feel lost and uninterested. I enjoy talking about the fun side... the fact that what we all have in common is a love and appreciation for japan and sylvian music and image. YUM!!

Couldnt agree more. I feel there is a good balance on here between our down and dirty lust for the boys and a more cerebral appreciation of their music.

We can go into raptures about Mick's rat-tail (well maybe with the exception of Gods (snigger) but also go into even bigger raptures about the awesomeness of his bass-playing...etc etc etc....

When I was in my teens and studying music I was very into learning all my scales, music theory etc.

I had a great music teacher who once told me "You know, music is both a science and an art." That really stuck with me and made me realize that all of the technique I was trying to learn was just the "science" part of music. From that point on I tried to understand the "art" part and discovered that it was more difficult and mysterious than the technical aspects of music.

In other words, if you only focus on the technical side of music you're missing most of the fun!
