just some news about me...

Postby godisinthesilences on Fri Jun 13, 2008 6:53 pm

A few people here know that over the last two years I have been suffering with an inner eye infection called Iritis/Uveitis (an illness which is caused by immunological weaknesses normally related to severe forms of arthritis). As a photographic artist and photographic educator this has been one of the hardest things I've had to deal with in my life. This chronic illness has slowly robbed me of my sight, most recently becoming severely debilitating since March. This infection requires constant medication of steroids to "calm the flares". The steroids in turn have worsened an already slow developed cataract. This cataract, since May, has been severe and it stole the sight in my right eye practically over night. I was considered legally blind in that eye at a drs visit 2 1/2 weeks ago.

This past Monday I had cataract surgery ... Joyfully, I am happy to report that the vision in my right eye , for distance viewing, is better than it has ever been in my entire life now. I only need small reading glasses for close up work and reading. However, the surgery came with a risk and that is the increase in my infection being stirred up badly. I am treating this aggressively and my dr. says it is healing very well.

I give all the credit to an amazing surgeon who took my illness and vision more seriously than my previous dr had. My mother insisted I see this new dr... and friends I am here to tell you that like it or not our mother's are sometimes right on! Listen to your parents! They do have wisdom and love in their words and actions.

Anyway, I am thrilled to say that I feel very soon I will be able to get back to photography.... something I haven't been truly able to work on since this infection began.
My plan? To work on a new series of images using my Polaroid SX-70... an homage to the lost artform of instant film photography.

For those of you who read through this .... thank you. :-)

Gods,
I am sending you right this moment a virtual hug through cyberspace to NY State! I sincerely hope you are feeling healthy and well soon, that the infection is soon under control and that your eyesight gains in strength and clarity. Keep focused on your goals and I am sure you will achieve them soon. Keep taking your mothers advice too - she knows what she is talking about, and God bless you.

Hugs
Astronaut xxx.

Gods, I'm so pleased it has worked out for you. I had to have laser surgery 4 years ago - not to correct my sight but to 'mend' retinal tears, because if they tear all the way across you've had it. So I think I understand a little of what you went through.

Hugs

Thank God for the doctor who helped you and took things serious.
Bad eyesight, what a different world that is...
Very happy for you that you can enjoy the world's colours and forms/shapes again and yr photography!!!
No wonder you weren't here for some time... this must have taken you through a period of heavy inner-emotions. Hope that looking at a great picture of David and also soon a new music project from him will make your world shine as before :D
Sending you a lot of strength for further recovery

Yeah i've been told i have the potential for retinal detachment due to being so near sighted as well as it being one of the risks of the surgery. My understanding is it is repairable. My dad had a retinal tear in his eye years ago and had laser surgery on it as well. His eye mended itself over night after that ... the healing power of the eye is amazing...

Actually I won't be cured completely... Iritis/uveitis is a chronic illness with no cure ... hopefully though i can get rid of my flare soon....
