What do Your favorite songs say?
..and what does it mean to You?

Hanoi Rocks

"I love my freedom
And speaking out of my mind
I can see how that could get somebody down
Tho' you can't always see them
You can feel their vicious vibes
They somehow seem to find their way around

And you'll never see me fail
And you can't make me disappear

BEEN OBSCURED BY TOO MUCH DARKNESS
OVERCOME WITH SO MUCH SADNESS
BUT I'M STILL SHINING BRIGHT AS EVER

Nobody can touch me
It's a Universal Law
My kind of spirit just can't be controlled
I can only win
Even if I lose
I always find out something I can use

No use tryin' to stop me now
To overshadow me somehow

BEEN OBSCURED BY TOO MUCH DARKNESS
OVERCOME WITH SO MUCH SADNESS
BUT I'M STILL SHINING BRIGHT AS EVER

The best kept secret in Rock'n'Roll
Harder they come harder they fall
They couldn't mess with my gang
Can't suss our lingo and our slang
They couldn't mess with my gang
My gang's a Rock'n'Roll band

BEEN OBSCURED BY TOO MUCH DARKNESS
OVERCOME WITH SO MUCH SADNESS
BUT I'M STILL SHINING BRIGHT AS EVER"

Hiya S4pB! :D

I think this is a great topic!

Were you wondering about our favourite lyrics including, or not including Japan and related songs?

Sandy Denny - Take Away the Load

I sit and wonder at the thought
That someday you'll be going
At the same time I realize
I must not be afraid
You are the one I love
You are the one I touch
And it's you who must not go
But it's I who must try not
To send you away.

Out of my door and along the path
Where I have never travelled
Could it be that you would help me
Out along that road?
I only want your hand
I only want your smile
From you that is everything
From you that is all I need
To take away the load.

*words I wish I had at the time I needed to say them*

Ever the romantic, my heart is always frantic, knowing there's a day, not too far away, when you will have forgotten me...
Hallucinating lucidity

Thanks, S4pB! :D

There are so many songs I love. I always think that songs are the best form of art in the world. Here are the first two lines from a song that always makes me tearful:

"Oh, I'm on my way, I know I am
Somewhere not so far from here"

(Sitting, Cat Stevens)

Maybe I love this song because it's one of the first records I remember hearing when I was little, because my parents used to play the album that starts with that song. If it were possible to have a song played at your graduation ceremony, I would choose that one - something about being 'on my way' to somewhere I hadn't thought I could reach for a long time.

I'm sure I will be able to think of lots more!

Brilliant topic, S4pb.

I thought this would be easy, but I'm actually finding it hard to pick one favourite (a) because there are just too many great songs (b) because there are a lot of songs I love where the lyrics seem absolutely perfect when they come together with the music in an amazing way, but when you see the lyrics written down without the music they seem surprisingly lame (c) because, as those of you who have read the Misheard Lyrics thread will know, I have an embarrassing talent for getting the wrong end of the stick with song lyrics, and I'm never 100% sure that what I'm hearing is what the guy/girl is actually singing!

Probably my two favourite songs of all-time (and in both cases the lyrics are at least part of the appeal) are "Damage" by Sylvian and Fripp (I guess you all know the words to that) and "She Gets Out The Scrapbook" by Furniture (favourite line: "Come on you big bad world, you big bad world, and entertain me, because I'm bored of myself" - see what I mean about the lameness of the words without the music?).

There are a whole raft of Sylvian songs where I love, love, love the words ("Ghosts", "Forbidden Colours", "A History of Holes", "The Boy With the Gun")

But if I had to pick a song to be my theme tune it would be "World Shut Your Mouth" by Julian Cope.

"put you head back in the clouds and shut your mouth ..." Great choice Mel! You're right - this is actually quite a difficult thing to do. I have so many favourites, depending on mood etc, so it is really difficult narrowing it down to just one song. I'm gonna need time to really think about this one, so 'll get back to you S4pB ...

OK - Here are 2 of my favourites!

Bookends Theme (1.23)
Paul Simon 1968.

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories; They're all that's left you

Kathy's Song
Paul Simon 1965.

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

So many more I could choose, but that will do for now ... :-D

Ahhh nice one - My current fave song for almost 15 years now is Shades by echolyn... There's just not a thing about this song that you can't love (except that it ends). You may be able to tell by the lyrics but it just takes you through every range of emotions there is.

If birds fly over the rainbow
Then why can't I
Was it just a shade of gray
Or a splash of blue that made up the colors of her eyes

You're slipping away
Eroded by a sea of forgetfulness
Don't forget

Half of me still standing on this sinking ship
Half of me still looking for answers on this one way
..... trip

I was thinking as usual
In my own living color
Of the glass that pierced her heart, of the mirror in her eye
With my own vivid clarity
And a touch of distortion
I saw our love thrown out the window
I saw a shade close in her eye
And a silent hint of Autumn frosts my heart
Crystal blue is my hell
The absence of her eyes leaves the seasons standing still

Even my Juliet with her faded rose...(Do you think of me with a smile)
Can't conceal the obvious, crimson...(Full of contempt)
Tears that fill my life's cup......(I would start to laugh but I just)
Cried from the heart that no longer... (Can't find the punch line)...
Feels the warmth...(I can't stand the heat)
Cried for a heart that no longer...(Hanging around that watering hole)
Feels the day by day

In tune with my memory her visions
Dance across the embers in my mind
By night it's the silence that alarms me
Her refusal was so quiet
That it almost drove me mad!

Even when Romeo strikes his...(Do you think of me with a smile)
Favorite pose he can't conceal the obvious...(Full of contempt?)
Crimson tears that fill my life's cup...(I would start to laugh but I just)
Cried from my heart...(Can't find the punch line)
(I can't stand the heat)
(Hanging around that watering hole)

I wasted my words in verbal frustration
My diction just coal to heat your sensation
The rise and fall of ryhthmatic gyration
Just digging for fun in your sexual foundation
The taste of your love just fuels my engine
Submerged in the flow of my one night injection
The moment explodes in compelling fashion
Washed clean my fancy for nocturnal attraction

I was swimming here again in my sea of insecurity
just shooting up some flares for your raft of confidence
Instead you just threw stones and some weights for my ankles
You gave up
You never tried for the other side of the rainbow...

And so the story goes
One heart walks off into the sunset
The other walks alone, forever Tuesday...
All remains the same
And I have to hold your hand
I've just got to hold your hand
Could your hand hold my heart...forever?
I say to you now
Like I said to you then
When a kiss would say it all and it meant forever
Now those days of vision have all gone
The key to all is love
Peace within your heart
The price for love is great but patience leads to truth

Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Alone with my addiction for your love
Standing in the rain laughing at the sunshine
Making wishes by the pool...you're there

You're there when I'm divided
Half of me in tears
half of me still looking for answers for that one way trip

Great lyrics Proggrl. I love the lines:

"Submerged in the flow of my one night injection
The moment explodes in compelling fashion
Washed clean my fancy for nocturnal attraction ..."

Oh yes, that's one of the things I love about this song - lyrically speaking. It just takes you through every aspect and emotion of a relationship start to finish. Mostly dealing with the end of a relationship (as Ray wrote it after his divorce), but you really do take the relationship as a whole at the end of it - kind of like your life flashing before your eyes.

That bit you quoted is certainly a vital part to a romantic relationship, the intimacy involved. Just a perfect song all around.

H-band - The Deep Water (particularly the live version on 'Live Body - Live Spirit')
and in particular this bit:
------
'oh my love I know what I am
a lost cause, hopeless beyond forgiveness

oh my heart knows what I am
a lost cause, hopeless... hopeless

but can you know
how my heart knows you?'
------
Tears in my eyes even whem I'm typing this...

These were me in so many ways..

So many things that mean a lot, So many things that I never got, You can look boy,
but you can't touch, What I don't have seems to mean so much
A beat up Chevy or Mercedes Benz
Should make no difference in the end
But I get mad, baby real upset
'Cos what I want I can never get
They're just like cattle walking down the street
Some get so fat while others never eat
I may be shut out but I ain't finished yet
My mind is blank I take another drink
I'm not destroyed but I'm right on the brink
I sit and count them shot by shot
The little things that I never got
Those uptown ladies on 5th Avenue
It's like I hate them but I want them too
I may be shut out but I ain't finished yet
I don't get it, I don't get it at all
I don't get it, I don't get it at all
Why I can't get it, Why it's a thing I'll never get
Why I can't get it, Why it's a thing I'll never get
A yacht and a Rolls and a private jet, A dirty blonde in a red Corvette
Wife and kids and a house and a pet, Those are the things that I can't get
