Tortuous connections

Postby Melaszka on Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:21 am

Is there anyone else out there who, like me, has far too little work to do at the moment, and wants to join me in a silly parlour game?

The object is to connect a musician (I've taken David as my starting point, but it could be someone completely non-Japan related) back to him/herself, passing through as many links as possible, and trying to encompass the most unlikely bedfellows and the broadest mix of musical styles possible.

Here's my pathetic little example - I'm sure you can do much better.

1. David Sylvian

2. was in Japan with Mick Karn

3. who played on Kate Bush's album "The Sensual World"

4. which also featured Trio Bulgarka's Yanka Ruphkina

5. who has guested on a couple of albums by Transglobal Underground

6. who were the support act on a 1998 tour by Page and Plant

7. who were in Led Zeppelin with John Paul Jones

8. who is now managed by Richard Chadwick

Back to 1. who also manages David Sylvian

Heh - that's a nice little twist to the 6 Degrees of Separation game. I'll see if I can think of one.

Wow, that's impressive! I am happy already that I could connect DD and my fave Spanish band (Presuntos Implicados) and connect Presuntos also with David somehow, but in a loop... difficult!

I'm very impressed that you can connect DD and DS through Presuntos Implicados- what are the exact connections? And what kind of music do Presuntos play?

I'm amazed how most musicians I like do connect up somehow. I have really quirky taste - I don't go for a particular genre or style, I like really disconnected things, and people who see my record collection often splutter in despair, "But you can't like the Pet Shop Boys and Led Zep! That's just mad!" Yet the musical world does seem to be very small and the most unlikely people do seem to have worked together/influenced each other.

You are right, the musica world is a lot smaller than we think. I can't believe that I have connected so many bands I like through the Japan boys! (some of them very different)

Presuntos Implicados make a mixture of smooth pop with R&B, Brazilian influences and jazz even sometimes. Sadly their singer left 2 years ago and she just released a solo album and they are currently recording with a new singer.

Their guitarrist is the guy in the pic on my gallery with Analog, Poisoned and me, cause he's a huge David fan and we all went together to the Madrid gig. If someone had told me back in 1985 when I started to be his fan that I'd go to any gig with him... I wouldn't have believed it! His solo stuff is very close to David's in many songs :)

So their connection (it's not a loop one but it would go like this...)

1. Duran Duran made "Breath after Breath" with Milton Nascimento

2. Presuntos Implicados made "Canciones y Momentos" with Milton as well.

3. Juan Luis from Presuntos produced Claudio Baglioni

4. Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree drummed for Claudio for 2 of his tours.

5. Richard plays with Gavin in PT

6. Rich and David were in Japan.

Heh! :-D

Edit: just remembered that Juan Luis, in his solo project Logan, made a version of King Crimson's "Moonchild" which gives a Fripp-Sylvian connection as well, but not a real one!

I think I can just about complete the circle back to DD.

8. David made The First Day with Robert Fripp

9. who married Toyah Wilcox

10. who made the album The Lion Symmetry with Tony Banks

11. who played in Genesis with Phil Collins

12. who sang on Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas?" with Simon le Bon

back to 1. who is in DD

I think using Band Aid is cheating, though!

Presuntos Implicados sound great - I'll have to check them out. It must be amazing going to gigs with one of your favourite artists. That's so cool.

Yeah, I still can't believe it! I think that we both like David made a lot in favour of our closeness. Thanks David! :D
