All of Simon's smiles, comments and winks during the show are so much unlike David.

Simon smiles make me wonder if he has x-ray vision!!

It does make me think, Duran tend to be compared to Japan (by those who know of both bands....), but it is really like comparing apples and oranges imho. Would love to have seen David running around the Hungry Like The Wolf video, - singing say.... Swing...

Anyway, Duran, Arcadia and Japan interesting trivia.... When interviewed during the recording of the Arcadia project, back in 1985, Nick Rhodes was asked what sound do you think this record would take... his reply? He stated that the sound on the Arcadia project would be like Japan's Tin Drum.

I think Tin Drum is Asian in sounding, while So Red The Rose is Eastern European... what does everyone else think?

Did he say so?!?! Well I would call it audacity...
I can't find any connection between Japan's Tin Drum and Arcadia's So Red The Rose...
So Red The Rose is having the Hispano and French thing. Nothing Asian in it...And of course Tin Drum is better, and i'll start with the lyrics for example.

hhmm i think the only similarity between tin drum and so red the rose is how both set the stage for ambience. I do like the two lyrically. I wouldn't say one was better than the other ... they are both very different in meaning and approach. Perhaps Nick was having a delusional moment... he does that alot. LOL I think aliens can't help that....

Yep he did (I have a pic of him with Nick somewhere...) Also John Taylor played in one of his solo albums.

Love it!! That's our Duran alien for you!!! (Although during the Arcadia project I prefer to think of him as a Vampyre!! )

Both albums are quite different, but both when listened to are mood altering, and can take you away from the hum-drum of the day, - so i still play both today! (Probably the only area that Arcadia is slightly ahead on is image. Arcadia was loaded with it, and for 1985 that album sticks out like a sore thumb compared to others released around the same time! I also remember reading it was one of the most expensive albums made at the time.)

Were these some of the pictures you were thinking about??

I think his comment makes total sense. Production-wise and some of the rhythms are similar to those found on Tin Drum - thinking how "The Art of Parties" wouldn't sound out of place on the Arcadia album alongside tracks like "Relection Day" and "The Flame", as an example. I don't think he was referring to any ethnic/cultural influences.

I think Arcadia succeeded in that respect. I like both albums but if I had to choose one, I'd pick "So Red the Rose." In my opinion it's aged better and still sounds contemporary while Tin Drum sounds like a product of its time.

Not those two, it was one tiny one for a Bravo mag, but I hadn't seen those before, so thanks for them! :D

Thanks for the pictures! They're beautiful!
I still thinks "So Red The Rose" is different from "Tiny Drum". And "Tiny Drum" is better for me, though I still think 'Goodbye is Forever' was one of the most beautiful songs ever made.

OK, I've been listening to SRTR lately and I agree with all of you - it is a brilliant piece of work, fantastic - can't praise it highly enough really. Heartofdavid wrote:

Couldn't have said it better myself! Exactly my thoughts (wow! somebody else out there who thinks like me - can this be possible??) :D

And Ellyn: Yes, I was thinking SRTR had a definite Eastern European feel to it, I thought it reminded me very much of some Hungarian folk music I've heard. Quite, quite beautiful, haunting, and melancholy, yet passionate and sensual at the same time. Whilst 'Tin Drum' has a lot of haunting, melancholia to it, it lacks passion - well IMO anyway ... OOOOH! And "thank you so much" for sharing those photos! I hadn't seen the one with Masami Tsuchiya before. However, what was Nick thinking of wearing that totally VILE stripey coat thingie? YUK! I'm sure that was never in fashion - not even in 1985!!!! :P
