Reviews of Live Shows 2007 - WARNING: Spoilers!

Talk about anything David Sylvian related.

Postby sonic_chronicler on Fri Sep 21, 2007 10:56 pm

I have sorted through my photos and the semi-servicable ones are now on a slideshow on my website www.sonicchronicler.com click on the David Sylvian link at the top.

These are (mostly) different pics to the ones I posted the other day, they were all taken at either Manchester or Glasgow. I didn't take any at London after we were all warned it could be 'dangerous to the performers' didn't want David falling off his stool  (FWIW I don't use a flash at shows anyway)

You'll need quicktime installed on your computer to view it.

If you like the music that is all the matters, and as for the musician's performances well ... I always subscribe to the belief that on any given night, they are giving the best they can that night.

Oh, I agree. I've been giving links to the reviews in case anyone else is interested to read them, not because I am endorsing them or affected by them in any way - I think I've already made my views amply clear!

I must have missed something in the Yuka thread? (I dont visit here everyday... most of this week have been sick - I picked up little niece and nephew bugs - if any little person insists on giving you a hug, just check out what else they may be giving you.... they are wonderful though...) Anyway, I figure with any relationship the only people who know truely anything about it, are the two involved. Anything else is just guess work.

Like most bands and musicians I listen to, I stick with the music, (and sometimes the visual aspect helps too! ), afterall, that will be their lasting legacy, not gossip and innuendo.

Hope you're feeling better now - bugs can really make you feel like death for a few days.

The Yuka comments really didn't bother me, as I doubt whether a confident, sophisticated, intelligent woman like Fujii would be particularly bothered to learn that a few obscure people she's never met (and who're probably not exactly Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt themselves) think she's minging, even if she does visit this forum!

I generally try to discuss the music, not the personalities or the gossip, although occasionally I can't help speculating about intriguing and seemingly autobiographical lyrics (e.g. Can anyone honestly say they didn't start to speculate about the state of Sylvian's marriage when they first heard Blemish?)

I'm a gross hypocrite, because I've probably written loads of stuff on public forums which I really wouldn't feel comfortable with DS reading, but where I try to draw the line is that i think it's OK to state a personal opinion, no matter how brutal, but not to assume thoughts, feelings or motives on the part of the artist or to impose obligations on them. e.g. when Blemish came out, although I totally disagreed with them, I didn't have a problem with people saying "I was hugely disappointed with this album and hate it", but I thought "David obviously doesn't care about his fans at all if he can release a record like this" or "He should have done something different" was going too far. But I'm rambling way off topic.

Sonicchronicler, the photos sound amazing, i'm going to have to install quicktime.

Bonjour, I am in Paris right now.
Have to say that the Brussels show was amazing!!!!!!
I almost sat down on someone else but a very nice man kept a seat for me. I have taken a few pictures and a few in Paris as well. :-)

Nath, it was so nice to see you!

I have met a lot of nice people at the gigs also a few people from Holland, a nice lady from Italy who walked me to the youth hostel in Brussels because it didnt feel safe.

I also spoke with two people who have seen Japan live and one man gave me his email so hopefully he will send me the picture he took of David while he received a bunch of flowers from him. A nice man that was sitting beside me has seen Japan when he was 14 but he said all he remembers is Micks hair  he thinks it had all colours!

I have to say that David is really playing with very talented people, I love Takumas playing and it seems as if Steve is playing drums louder and louder. Theo Travis is very skilled too and Keith Lowe, they are all awesome.

Yeah I meant Steve. David just passed next to me, signed the book and then I asked him a pic and he said he had no time and left. Steve just said he would stay there until he signed all the books I had for everyone, "Don't worry, calm down, I won't leave until I sign them all." Then the tour manager came back and told him that he was the last one and everyone was waiting for him. But he still finished signing more stuff and posed for more pics. Total awesome our Steve! :D

*waves to Bridget* So glad you are having so much fun! Wish I could be there with you!

Thanks for the pics Sonic, you saw how bad mine are! And yeah that "pottentially dangerous" comment made everyone roar with laughter at the RFH

Re: Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Postby fletchertronics on Sat Sep 22, 2007 11:03 am

Hello all,

De-lurking briefly to post my thoughts about Tuesday’s gig at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham…

Firstly, I should say that it was great to see some of my Sylvian-gig buddies there – Lisa and I enjoyed our time spent with you all. If any of you happen to be reading, a big "hi" to you, especially Sandy, Karen, Paula, Garry, Andrew and Matt. :-)

Highlights for me included; Ride, Snow Borne Sorrow, Playground Martyrs, Brilliant Trees, and Every Colour You Are… Which surprises me, as these wouldn't (all) necessarily be in my usual list of favourites.

Excluding the title track, I didn't particularly enjoy the live Nine Horses renditions. For one thing, there was a little too much reliance on backing tracks, and paradoxically there was also too much missing from the originals. Whilst I find the production to be of a high standard throughout the Nine Horses recording project, I'm less drawn to the material than I am say towards Blemish, as it's a little nondescript for my liking - so maybe that’s the issue? Also, my 2nd favourite NH track, Darkest Birds, was sadly absent, but that's no big deal I guess.

I was very disappointed with the acoustics at the Birmingham show. Clearly David himself was struggling with the stage foldback mix to begin with, but even after some adjustments 2 – 3 songs in, the sound from where I was sitting (7 rows back) was boomy, and muddied a lot of the detail that was clearly in there somewhere.

Part of the acoustic problem is the venue itself – It's designed for classical music. However, the mix didn't really compensate for that, and could have been better. It was unflattering towards David's vocal style, which is already bass-heavy, but his upper mids and high end were pretty much lost.

The set list contained some surprises, for me at least, as I had deliberately avoided all the forums prior to the show. The plusses being that there were a number of pieces David had never been performed live before, but the minus being a few pretty obvious oldies clearly thrown in as crowd pleasers.

As mentioned above, I found some of the Nine Horses tracks dull in this context, although when David produced a megaphone during Snow Borne Sorrow I laughed out loud, in a good way! His dry humour still creeps in now and then… ;-)

During the high spots I was taken away by the music, and reminded (not that I really needed reminding) what a huge influence this man’s music has had on me at key stages in my life, both as a musician and as a music lover in general. However, I also – for the first time ever at a Sylvian gig – found my mind wandering at times. I just wasn't fully engaged throughout, because I felt that David himself was, at times, going through the motions…

Sure, a less than perfect Sylvian gig is still worth attending, and stands head and shoulders above many other artists' best attempts, but when the lights came up at the end of this particular night I found myself thinking "Is that it? Surely it's not over already?" It felt like the show was only just getting going at that point.

I think it’s safe to say that David 'was' partially going through the motions, given the number of recent interviews stating his intention never to do this (at least in this way) again. There doesn't seem to be any real reason for this tour, other than perhaps as a promotional vehicle for Samadisound, and a cash generator. But I don't think that's a 'bad' reason for touring – it’s just that previous tours have tended to showcase something bold and new in David's approach.

On the band: Keith Lowe is a great bassist, and a nice chap to boot. Steve is great, but I find his drum work pretty tame these days – he rarely breaks out of his comfort zone, which is a shame. I struggled to hear Takuma due to the poor mix, but liked what I did hear… There's no doubting Theo's musicianship, but I wasn't entirely sold on the addition of flutes, etc. to some of the pieces.

What the band lacked was a guitarist. David frequently used his electric guitar as a prop, but played very little, and some of the material suffered due to the absence of guitar, (in my view).

Reading this back, I'm sure some folks will think it a negative review, but I hope it doesn't come over that way. These are the candid, honest thoughts of someone who greatly admires the man's work. I did indeed enjoy much about the show, but it's the first time I've ever come away from a Sylvian performance feeling anything less than ecstatic! I guess I've been spoiled in the past ;-)

If I were to hear a properly mixed soundboard-derived recording of the show I might feel a little different, as the acoustics were certainly the largest distraction.

Oh, and one more mini-gripe – Enough already with the medleys! :-)

I really do hope he tours again, but would prefer for him to play smaller venues with better acoustics, and try out newer material for the most part, with different musicians. I may get my wish, as it would seem that David is more likely to do just that in the future, rather than 'Everything & Nothing part 3'…

Rounding off – I'll just reiterate what a huge fan I am, and indeed have been since the age of 13, (to put that in context, I'm 38 now - groan). I continue to appreciate David's progression musically, and eagerly wait whatever's next. Some of my all-time live highlights have been at Sylvian gigs, but this just wasn't one of them.

Great night out though! :-)

Cheers,

Lee

P.S. The tour book, as usual, is a thing of beauty, and I love the new tracks. Thanks to Keith Lowe I managed to get mine signed by David & Steve too. 8)

I was at the Manchester show and Lee's review could well have been written for me on that evening, even down to the fact were both 38, both became fans age 13 (I saw him on the tv -a programme called Riverside -and was hooked).
Since that time the man's music has been immensely importaant to me. His music literally got me through some testing times. I think I read someone say once that many people have testified that at its best Sylvian's music can have an almost spiritual effect. It certainly made me reflect inwardly and helped me come to terms with aspects of my own personality/problems I was uncomfortable with. I really cant put it into words well enough but suffice to say nothing else has ever come close in helping me find out about myself. Sounds cheesey, I know. Im sure many others feel similarly and perhaps can describe it better than me.
Friday 14/9 at BWH for the first time made me wonder if I had been wrong about my hero all along. The timesonline review struck a few chords in how the concert made me feel that night, as did Lee's review and others i've read. The concert did have good moments but not nearly enough. Playground Martys/Transit spring to mind.
Since, ive had a chance to reflect. I listened again to the 2001 tour. It confirmed that David really can put on a great live show. The arrangements on pieces like Waterfront and Nightporter were just magnificent on the E&N tour. It was the most complete and assured performance i'd ever seen him give and Ive seen him on all his tours as a solo artist. In 2001 the sound was fantastic. His vocals were great. The setlist worked better. The arrangements were beautiful. The pace was varied -with less jazz cafe style treatment of the songs. Come to think of it though when has the sound ever been wrong at a ds gig. He's a perfectionist for goodness sake - so how is it so wrong this time? Perhaps, he's got an ear infection or something.
Seriously though, if I had to rank his tours this one would finish a distant last. I actually felt like leaving before the end. Never thought that would happen.

Conegliano Show...

Postby MoodyB on Sat Sep 22, 2007 5:30 pm

Greetings to all,

Just a last minute note (before I'm sans computer) to anyone attending the Conegliano show, I will be there photographing the show, so if you see me please feel free to come up and say hello!
(I'll be the tall dark haired guy toting the big arse camera!)
;-)

If I don't get time to post again, I hope everyone continues to enjoy the shows...I'll be posting my review when I get back, hopefully with some decent images!

All the best,
Chris

Paul Morley gave Sylvian a 4 star review in the Sunday Telegraph this morning, but the review doesn't seem to have appeared on the web yet.

Nice to see a press review by a longstanding fan who actually understands Sylvian.

Unfortunately not everyone has the means to get to Europe, or Asia for that matter, not that I am having a go at you, honest guv.

That said there is no need for anything insulting, though nothing wrong with constructive criticism.

That's a fair enough comment, and I do understand believe me!
I was very bummed when I couldn't see him play with Fripp on the Italian tour and the Japanese dates too...I also couldn't swing the initial E&N tour, thankfully he did play here in the States and I was able to catch a couple of shows...But I didn't know that at the time and I didn't throw a public wobbler about it!

Here, now I'm going back to a subject I said I wasn't!

My point was simply aimed at encouraging civility in public forums...

I couldn't agree more, I missed the E&N Tour due to my move to the States.
I had tickets for the concert in London but then moved before that to Chicago, and didn't even know he was playing here, though I was in London for that week anyway, but may have rescheduled that if I knew.
The problem with missing his concerts are they don't come around very often, and if the rumours are true about this being the last, will be seriously depressed.
I also feel pain that my move from London has effectively cost me the opportunity of seeing him, I flew back for the AFITF tour, but can't keep doing that.
Enjoy the concert Chris, and look forward to seeing some more of your excellent work.

Chris I can't wait to see your pictures and hear what you thought of the shows.

Apparently the Brussels and Paris show is out there already... however it seems to be available only in torrent format. Which to be honest I'm way to dumb to figure out.
Does anyone on here have those shows in mp3 format???

The glasgow show is available as mp3 format. It is slightly quiet but not terrible. I hear the other shows are much clearer....

ANYONE???? HHHHEEELLLPPP

Show in Milan 23/09/2007

Postby iledef on Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:11 pm

Hello everybody! My very first post....anyway.....finally yesterday I saw the show in Milan! First of all, let me say something very simple: I am not at all experienced to say if the quality of the sound was good or not and, for sure, I'm not able to do any sort of similar reviews: I am only one of the several "common people" who loves David's music since the 80's and who looked forward to the day to see him live impatiently for over 23 years! So, in my opinion, everything I saw or listened to during the yesterday show was absolutely amazing! A dream turned to reality! Maybe this has been the first and the last time I've got the possibility to see him (I live in a small village in Italy and I don't even speak English very well to ask for a sign if one lucky day I will face him....)but, let me say a thing: my life will not change, of course, but I'll keep sweet memories in my heart and maybe one day I'll tell my grandchildren about a beautiful September night back in 2007......
Thanks for reading and sorry for my mistakes.....
