Does anyone recognise this description?

This is totally random, but about 12 years ago I had an odd conversation with a then-colleague when I said I liked David Sylvian.

"Oh, yeah, I remember him. The guy from Japan. He's lost all his hair now, hasn't he?"

"Er, I don't think so..." I said.

"Yeah, yeah, I saw him interviewed on the telly a couple of years ago. He was completely bald. And he's finally come out as gay."

"Er, but he wasn't actually.."

"No, no, well, he always denied it in the 80s, didn't he? But he's had a long-term male partner for about the last ten years who's the love of his life and they're now living in Ireland."

Obviosuly my colleague was thinking of completely the wrong person, but I've often wondered, just out of random curiosity, who he was thinking of. Any suggestions?

Boy George....it's a bit concerning that your friend could confuse the two! :-D

Ah, thanks for clearing up a minor mystery for me. The person concerned was a top bloke, but much inclined to grasping the wrong end of the stick.

strange mix up yeah, but then again they all did wear make up back in the 80s. Of course it sort of shows how your collegue's "old age" memory is setting in already.

that's funny story, I loved Boy George until 2001.
Now I'm interested in Japan so much.
I couldn't find any description about Japan and David on his autobiography "Take It Like a Man", but when I heard live version of 'Sometimes I feel so low', it reminded me of 'Cheapness and Beauty' by Boy George.

Now I think about it, it makes a little more sense - they were probably the two male 80s singers most consistently mistaken for women (never understood it with George, myself - that jaw was so masculine, he could have been wearing a lorryload of make-up and I'd still know. But the first time I saw a picture of David I was convinced it was a stunningly beautiful woman)

At the time of this conversation, I didn't know enough about David's domestic arrangements to be able to say for sure that the Irish and gay things were untrue, but from the cover of the First Day, where David was sporting, if anything, too much hair, I knew the bald thing had to be a mistake!

George looked great around 1987 when he was really hooked up on drugs.
That Isabella Rosselini look on the cover of his first solo album was cool.
But still, I have to say the opposite, that I could never have mistaken David for a girl...

I'm thinking of Nick Kershaw - is that how you write it?

he used to spell it Nik Kershaw .... I absolutely adore him. He's still making music... think he just came out with a new one a couple of years ago.

I saw a very funny interview with him a few years ago, where he said that people are still writing to him in all seriousness with "solutions" to The Riddle - there is no solution, the lyrics were just a load of b*l*cks he made up to fit the tune.

Not too sure to be honest. My friend is the big Nik Kershaw fan, so I guess if she doesn't have it yet then it hasn't been released ... I could be very wrong though!
