The old grey whistle test

Postby Poisoned_Apathy on Tue May 09, 2006 5:48 pm

I have a doubt. How many times did Japan perform at the OGWT?? And can anyone tell me the tracks they played each time??

I have seen several videos from this show. I know some were filmed in 1980 and anothers in 1982, but I found a new one of 'The art of parties' where they are dressed completely different ,so I guess they played on that show more times.Am I right??

Hmmm... Good question! I know for sure that they played My new career, Swing, Cantonese Boy, Ghosts, Nightporter, and The art of Parties on there. I also think that there is a "Best of Old Grey Whistle Test" DVD That inludes "Ghosts" fron 1982. I would like to see more videos from the OGWT! That would be great!

As I recall, there were three appearances:

Dec 1980, Swing & My New Career
March '82, Ghosts & Cantonese Boy
October '82, Nightporter & Art Of Parties

I've uploaded some of these to YouTube, I'll have to get around to the ones from '80 at some point...

I'll have them as mpg's archives. The quality isn't wonderful but good enough, I think. I could send them to you, if you want. Or maybe I could upload them at yousendit.com or something like that...

I have all of these on my original VHS tapes, I've been in the process of converting to DVD...What I've done so far has been uploaded to YouTube (in reduced quality for the web).
When I have more time I'll carry on with the project, I have loads more tapes to wade through yet!

Thanks for posting those videos, by the way! (Almost typed btw... Aagh!) I don't know how I'd live without them! My favorite is the live Version of "Orpheus" from Italian TV.

Hola!
No problem! My English fails me too sometimes and I am English! ;-)
I do appreciate the kind offer though!
Gracias!

It'd be so neat if the OGWT performances were ever officially released. They probably should've been put on The Very Best of Japan but there's a typical record company for you.

I really love the performance of The Art of Parties- Masami Tsuchiya is absolutely wild on guitar!

The Ghosts performance is on the UK version of the OGWT DVD, but it would've been really nice to have these all on the DVD, plus the Top Of Pops appearances.

Masami was indeed going nuts on Art Of Parties! His theatrics was one of the reasons they asked him to play on the final tour...It's funny that Mick was so subdued, during the tour he was all over the place!

Everytime I watch Mick Karn play during "Oil on Canvas" I can't help but smile big, clench my fists, and say "HE'S... JUST... SO... COOL!!"

I juts love Masami!! He's a great guitarrist and a complete showman. I was shocked when I saw him at 'Oil on Canvas'. He's as cool as Mr Karn. :-)
