Hmmmmm, the song that got me interested in Japan back in the day was 'European Son', however, I think my favourite has to be 'Nightporter'. That song just makes me melt away - breathtaking ...

'Fall In Love With Me' from Quiet Life - real urgency to it and an impressive, impressionistic lyric ("A summerhouse in Texas, searching for Siberia?! In Texas?!"Are you sure?! oh...it's symbolism and stuff....ohhhhh......) - plus that motown drum pattern really kicks it forward in energy.

If I had to replace that (and there's no reason why I should...but I can't help but mention my second favourite) it would be 'Some Kind of Fool', although this isn't strictly 'Japan' I suppose.

Hard, but it is Swing for me as well. I will qualify it, and say that it is the version from Oil on Canvas. My brother bought the maxi-single, (Jesus, remember those?) with Visions on side one, I think, and Swing on side two. It transported me to a place I have never left.

All good choices here peeps! Mine has always been the 12 inch version of Art of Parties, I still get exactly the same feeling i had when I bought it on the day it came out, like a complete adrenalin rush. Steve and Mick were never more in time, all crunchy and rumbling and throbby,it has so much power and nervous energy behind it....and the synth and guitar and that gorgeous brass section...and the shouty girls on the chorus...wow, i have to ration my plays of that song....hhhmmmmnnnn

Am I the only one who got into Japan, let's say... backwards?

I saw Forbidden Colours on TOTP and was instantly captivated, but the first Japan (or related) records I bought were QL and the Live In Tokyo EP. I played the latter first, so Deviation was the first Japan song I ever heard!

Natasha -
It doesnt really matter how you got 'into' Japan! The fact that you did speaks volumes about your taste and musical discernment!

G H O S T S
the single, the artwork, it's position on the album. adorable.
the acoustic version David did alone on OGWT added to the magic.
but I never liked the way it was performed with Japan.
the first song I did fall in live with was Nightporter,
and Visions of China is possibly the track I've been listening to the most,
but it was Ghosts that made me realize what a genious David really is...
and I sooo adored Blackwater.

Only one Japan song? Difficult. I think I could go with Nightporter tho. Brill.

I think Sons Of Pioneers is the best Japan song! It's fantastic, especially live. :)

Maria, I do agree with you - it's very hard for me to pick a best song, there are so many - but I agree it's fantastic.

When I decided to watch Oil On Canvas with my partner in the same room, however, it was a different story. I think the words he used were 'suicide music'

Oh well, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, eh?
