Are the remasters worth it?

Postby John Trevethan on Tue May 09, 2006 9:25 am

I would say... absolutely!

I have the Oil On Canvas remastered version - as well as Brilliant Trees, Alchemy, Gone to Earth and Secrets of The Beehive. In all cases I feel that the remasters are vastly superior to the original releases. In general they have more overall volume and the low end is beefier. They match up much better with the current releases such as Nine Horses. I first noticed the difference when I put tracks from Everything and Nothing in my iPod's playlists up against the older stuff. For example, I put Ride in with the original Secrets tracks (since Ride was from those sessions) and the difference was very apparent. I wanted everything to sound like Ride! It was then that I went back and got as many of the remasters as I could at my local Tower Records.

Next I'm picking up the remastered versions of Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum (Tower didn't have them in stock). I'm not sure if there is a remastered version of Rain Tree Crow... anyone know about this?

Yes, there is. I ordered the Japan Remasters from Townsend Records, who have a 4 CD bundle of the 2006 remasters at a pretty low price (for anyone interested). Anyway, RTC was included in that bundle.

Enjoy,

The only thing I don't like is that the re-mastered Oil on Canvas is two discs; I prefer the one disc version.

mmmmm....two discs usually mean MORE music and more is better in this case. To me, anyway.

I am definitely tempted to buy the remastered versions but I cant help feeling a bit ripped off....

but on the upside it does sounds like they are well worth it....what are things like packaging like? Lots of sumptuous piccies/lyrics etc? It better be! :D

I love those! I ordered the RTC digipak a few days ago and just got it today. On top of sounding great, they look great, too. In fact, I think all CDs should be packaged that way.

The best way I can explain it is they package the cd not in a plastic "jewel" case as most are, but in a cardboard fold as it is or sometimes with a plastic tray inside for the disc. This has been done with both the Japan and Sylvian remasters/reissues. Some of the discs also include videos as well.

The coolest so far is the reissues of the first two Japan albums as well as In Vogue and Assemblage. They all include videos, more pics and when you stack the covers together the binding spells "Japan". 8)

Oh right - I have those (ie; the spines spelling 'Japan') - so they are the re-masters? If so I'm only missing Tin Drum....
