7/8 MISSING Feat. MICK KARN

I was in LA for the last month and a half,
absorbed in recording, shooting photographs and videos,
and making progress on all sorts of important matters.
It was a really insane schedule.
I returned to Japan the day before yesterday, and currently I feel like I might die from jet lag.
In the near future, I’ll take the time to tell you more about LA and what’s going on with X JAPAN.

While I was working in LA, I really hoped to help Mick in even a small way,
so I actually created a song at an amazingly fast speed to earn donations for him.
I took the song “MISSING” that was included in my first solo album,
and remade and re-recorded it according to my current sensibilities.
It turned into something entirely new, and is now called “MISSING LINK.”
This song represents the new form of “SUGIZO Music,” and I hope you all give it a listen.
It will be available to download on July 8 from Mick’s website,
then afterwards at a variety of locations including iTunes.
All the profits from the song will be donated to Mick.

I’m sure my most dedicated and devoted fans already know this,
but “MISSING” was my very first genuine solo piece.
It led to the creation of my first album, “TRUTH?”,
and is one of the starting points for the “SUGIZO music” that came after.
It is also one of my most important turning points for my musical incentive.

This song was born in 1996, when I was totally obsessed with drum n’ bass.
I took that groove and fused with an ambient feeling that evokes Asia and the Near and Middle East,
while also weaving in an old-fashioned melody, an edgy new wave guitar,
and the roars of Mick’s transcendent bass.
All together, I think that the things expressed in this song are quite interesting.
Unfortunately, when I look at the song from where I am now,
the rhythm approach, sensations, singing, lyrics,
and various textures seem rather infantile and unfulfilled.
The song has degraded over the years into something pitiful.

Yet when I listen to “MISSING” now, Mick’s bass playing is truly unique and wonderful,
and I don’t think that my guitar playing is too bad for someone in his late twenties.
I wanted to breathe new life into this song by infusing it with my current skills and sensibilities.
As a result, it has been reborn as a quintessential example of “SUGIZO music” in 2010 – a totally deep,
thrilling, progressive trance song.

I dropped the BPM way down,
transforming the song into a progressive trance groove with a four-on-the-floor kick
and an overwhelming synth bass.
The violin serves as my singing voice, leading the song and entwining with Mick’s intense bass.
The female voice dances about like a spirit, and there is a mysterious Asian atmosphere.
This ambient music seems to soar to the heavens,
and is a fusion of music made in 1997 and 2010 that goes beyond time.

However, me not being able to leave LA when I was working on this song was a huge problem.
This song was only completed because I left most of the production to MAZDA and d-kiku,
two of the people I trust the most.
kiku had an absolutely terrible time raising the quality of the violin
I recorded last year as a demo for a live arrangement,
somehow turning it into something we could actually use.
And of course, MAZDA ended up doing everything related to the rhythm track, from production to TD.
If these two didn’t exist, this song would have been impossible to create.
They understood my goals for this project, and even worked on it on a volunteer basis!
I am so very grateful to them. I am truly blessed and happy to have such wonderful friends.

In this way, this song was born from a variety of collaborative work.
It contains beautiful examples of Mick’s breath and vitality,
and I hope that you all get a copy and experience the world of the song.
And from the bottom of my heart,
I pray that Mick gets better so that we can play “MISSING LINK” together on stage!

Amongst all of these other things, I am now a year older.
I can’t believe that I’m already the same age as Bakabon’s father in “Genius Bakabon!”
But there’s nothing else to do but to give it my all until the day I am no more.
I’m going to plunge forward into the next year,
and am going to be more absorbed in making music than ever.

Thank you all for your support, and I look forward to spending the next year with you as well.

SGZ

Debi wrote the following message at Mick's Facebook page, but I haven't seen the post related to Sugizo's contribution at Mick's official page yet. I assume it will be there soon. So just need to keep checking?!

Mick Karn
Please check the website for updates. Recent posts include details of auctions people are kindly doing for the Appeal including a beautiful set of live photos of David & Steve by Cris Crader and a set of 3 Mick Karn prints by Dirk Tholenaar.

Today you will also find a message from Sugizo with a link to download a track entitled 'Missing Link'.

We are extremely grateful for everyone's support and generosity.

Thank you so much.

How ironic is that? The link for a song entitled "Missing Link" has gone ... missing!

I don't know what's happening, but hosting a popular file can lead to bandwidth problems and cause sites to go down, so maybe they are trying to get the tech stuff sorted before hosting it again.

I've had to treble the bandwidth for the Nightporter site - not cheap but luckilly I had donations stashed from earlier in the year so I could upgrade. There was a definite upswing in site visitors following the Porcupine Tree album release and tour, from December through to May - lucky I upgraded before Mick's news broke because site visitors are at an all time high.
