Tough call, since everyone knows I really like the first two albums alot. But everyone also knows how much I looooooove "Swing", so I had to vote for the second choice.

I could not choose so easily...
I love both styles but if i'm forced to, I say the second choice.

Hmm...

If you were just talking about the Japan years... That would be a tough choice, but I would probably end up choosing the latter. ... But if you're including Japan through his solo work... The latter hands down!

If this just relates to his time in Japan, I'd go with the Quiet Life through to Tin Drum singing style.

But there was still a major change in vocal style that doesn't seem to be reflected in your poll...in between Brilliant Trees and Gone To Earth. He definitely made a conscious effort to sing in an even lower register for Gone to Earth and onward. I think that Sylvian rerecorded the vocals for Weathered Wall, Brilliant Trees and Ghosts on the E&N disc because he himself wasn't yet too fond of his vocals.

I thought about this since this question was posted days ago.

David's voice has changed all along his career. I find subtle differences in every release, and I realize conditions of the recording can affect things, but I still say his voice has evolved so much.

You know...this is such a tough question for me. It's like the thread about which David's look is your favorite. I seriously cannot choose. For me, it really depends on my mood. If I'm feeling feisty and a bit wild and sexy, I love listening to their first two albums. If I'm feeling calm or thoughtful or inspirational, I like the rest of Japan albums. So my answers would be different everyday/week/month :smt102.

Okay...so today, I am loving the first two albums

I have to choose Quiet Life on with especial liking to his voice as it is now on Nine Horses stuff....Jesus Atom and Cell....so good.

I will own up (and make myself unpopular) and say I really didn't like the way he sang on the first two albums. It just sounds so forced and unnatural and only in places does he accomplish it without his voice sounding stretched...sometimes it's capable of irritating me...although admittedly not often for how could David really irritate anyone....

Except and I must say this...

For me the most horrific thing that Japan ever did was the cover of Don't Rain on my Parade - the first time I heard that it had to go off, just because David's voice was grating on me so much...

I have since been able to listen to it and can tolerate it now (it is Japan still after all) but still it feels so forced - stretched strained...

Always gonna be Quiet Life on...apologies for the mini essay as to why...

Personally....

I think there is something Divine about Dave's voice on "Brilliant Trees"

Mmmm, I agree, Brilliant Trees is a great album. I haven't heard it in years but I just ordered the CD at Amazon.

Hello, I'm new here but I have a strong sense of what I like:
I enjoy his higher voice, but I couldn't live without Quiet Life...But I like his voice in "Suburban Love" and "Adolescent Sex" as well as "Communist China"

I think the early Sylvian is much overlooked...maybe I'm just crazy!

hands down i prefer quiet life onwards. I almost find his voice too raw sounding in the first two albums. Not to say i don't enjoy listening to them occassionally.

But there is something so evocative about his voice as his career has progressed.

My voice favourite of David's would be Brilliant Trees
and Secrets of the Beehive close behind.
with Tin Drum on third place.
And my heart sings of many things
