Well it all fits, successful music career, moved to Costa Rica, into birds. AND it looks like him.

If it's not him, I'll eat my hat. :D I've often wondered what he looks like now...

So, riddle me this, why did he leave Japan? I don't think I've ever heard of a reason why. He was there for Gentlemen Take Poloroids, but then he was gone for Tin Drum, correct? And he wasn't present on Oil On Canvas.

Was he fired?

Did he jump or was he pushed? I remember reading it being put down to that old chestnut of musical differences as the band were moving away from there guitar based sound I actually saw him on his last Japan tour (THe Art Of Parties) but I think he didn't even play on the single....awesome guitarist though

Yeah, like Bern said, I believe I read something about there wasn't really much room for Rob's guitar work anymore. Though he's quite a guitarist, I agree.

What I understand is that Rob was the first to pull away from the group, due to Sylvian. Rob got tried of being bossed around and was starting to do session work for some big names. Plus he started another band in Australia not long after Tin Drum was released and then in the 90's had a band called "Slow Club" He also rehooked up with Jansen, Barbieri and Karn on "Beginning to Melt" and a couple other tracks in the early 90's.... other than that He really had nothing to do with Japan or Sylvian after "Polariods" even came out....

This is all well documented information. I actually emailed and spoke with one of Rob's personal friends on Mickkarn.net.... if you want You can research all the posts by "bleeper" I'm guessing a fellow ornithologist and co-worker of Rob's.

Check out the supposed lost Tapes of Rob Dean and few Japan pieces.

Rob Dean

Postby PicassoLover on Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:05 am

I just posted this for a bit of info I had on Rob Dean in another section. I am still getting my head around in here.
Some more info you may be interested in. I worked for Virgin Records as a PR chick in the Late 80's and Rob Dean signed to us with his band "The Slow Club". He lived in Melbourne for a few Years and Virgin Australia spent quite a large amount of money of the CD. It had a gold embossed cover and Virgin had all manner of launches etc for the project. Alas it did not do all that well. I got to know him quite well and found him the nicest person. He was an avid reader and we used to chat about books etc. Mind you I didn't know he was into bird watching. Also, back then I had been a huge Japan/David Sylvian fan, had collected for years and didn't have the guts to say I was a fan, I was too cool for my own good. I then heard he moved back to the U.K. and didn't hear much until recently. I then moved onto BMG Records. Cheers
