New recording information...

Postby silentwings on Sat Jan 23, 2016 5:23 am

Angharad Davies has mentioned on her website that last month (December 2015) she and an interesting array of musicians were recording with David....

December/Rhagfyr

7 - 13 .12.15 Skogen
Recording with David Sylvian
Angharad Davies + Anna Lindal, violin
Leo Svensson Sander, cello; Magnus Granberg, piano;
Rhodri Davies, harpa; John Eriksson, vibrafon;
Henrik Olsson, percussion + glass; Erik Carlsson, percussion
Petter Wastberg, elektronik och objekt
Toshimaru Nakamura, no-input mixing board

Here is Angharad's bio:

Angharad Davies is a violinist, one at ease in both improvising and composition, with a wide discography as part of varied range of ensembles and groups. She's a specialist in the art of 'preparing' her violin, adding objects or materials to it to extend its sound making properties. Her sensitivity to the sonic possibilities of musical situations and attentiveness to their shape and direction make her one of contemporary music's most fascinating figures. 2015 has seen her being commissioned for a new work at the Counterflows Festival, Glasgow and premiering Eliane Radigue’s new solo for violin, Occam XXII at the El Nicho Festival, Mexico.

She's performed at, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, BBC Proms, Music We'd Like to Hear's concert series, is an associate artist at Cafe Oto, is a member of Apartment House, Cranc and Common Objects, been artist in residence at Q-02 , and played live with Tony Conrad in the Turbine Room at the Tate Modern.Other collaborations have featured the likes of John Butcher, Daniela Cascella, Rhodri Davies, Julia Eckhardt , Kazuko Hohki, Roberta Jean, Lina Lapelyte, Dominic Lash, Tisha Mukarji, Andrea Neumann, Rie Nakajima, Tim Parkinson, J.G.Thirlwell, Stefan Thut, Paul Whitty, Manfred Werder, Birgit Ulher, Taku Unami and she's released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords.

Skogen is the name of the group - including Toshimaru Nakamura who appeared on Manafon.

Here is an interesting excerpt from their work:

Thanks silentwings - for this excellent news to wake up and read...and especially since the 'schnee' is definitely 'gefallen' here on the US east coast. :)

Sounds exactly like the sounds on Manafon. More of the same then...

I haven't yet heard the group's music, but I spot a huge difference from the Manafon sessions: in fact, Angharad writes "recording with David Sylvian", which makes me presume/hope he's not just looking on, but participating in the creative process and leading it where he wants it to go (which could also mean: let it flow freely).
Very very interesting. :D

Glad he's recording again...hope it ends up being more song-based...that said, I'm sure I'll be on board whichever way it goes. :-)

It's interesting to read in the interviews on the 'Another Timbre' website that the Skogen pieces released on that label are described as composed by Magnus Granberg (or Anders Dahl on 'Rows'), so there is a more structured approach than pure improvisation. The improvised element seems to come from the license that the players have to interpret the piece and express themselves within the structure of the composition. This seems an ideal situation for David to explore - a different context for the exploration of improvised elements that have been there throughout David's solo career.

I wonder then if these sessions were to record compositions by David.. ..we shall just have to wait and see.

As others have said it's great that he is recording and active. To hear of him working with a new group of musicians is also exciting. One can trace the path to get here, with Toshimaru Nakamura part of the Manafon sessions and with the excellent 'Egrets' released on samadhisound, and connections here with Mark Wastell of confront recordings. Angharad Davies has a release on confront 'six studies' and Rhodri Davies is part of 'Sealed Knot' with Mark Wastell.

It will be fascinating to see when these sessions surface and whether they will be part of the next release from David. There are other sessions that have taken place in recent years which are yet to see the light of day, including with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Taylor Deupree, and Otomo Yoshihide in 2012 - as well of course those with Joan Wasser.

If anyone is in Oxford tonight or Manchester on the 31st, Angharad Davies and Rhodri Davis are playing shows there.
Maybe a chance to get a feeling of what they could bring to Sylvians music,maybe a chance for a chat as well.

More confirmation here of David recording with Skogen last year - and mention of the involvement of drummer Simon Allen in the project.

At the end of last year Rupert recorded & mixed the ‘Sleep’ album for Max Richter and has been recently recording with David Sylvian for his forthcoming project.

:lol: thank you Blemished... he looks less peaky now :mrgreen:

And.............. below is some of the most positive news we've heard in a while. Thanks for posting that swebla.

Rupert Coulson seems like an interesting collabrative force, and gives me great hope for this DS's project, whatever it may be. Lets hope we hear something more soon.

That's great news! Thanks so much for posting. I love Max Richter's work - blue notebooks especially - so very excited about this. Does this imply that he is working in a Steve Nye-like role? Interesting if so. And I wonder what label this might be released on?

Something to add to this. I didn't realise that he had worked as an engineer on 'Died In The Wool', nor that he was an assistant on 'Rain Tree Crow' all those years ago. So they go back some way.

Interesting... All this suggests it may be a more structured project, unlike the laptop and field/found sound work of the last releases ... I too love Max Richter's works, and have recently bought Blue Notebooks (currently listening to Songs from Before) ... He brings experimentation along with beauty and structure, something DS has largely done until recently. I had feared a future release by DS may have been him making more random sounds, while some bloke burned his harp in the corner of the room, and someone else whacked their violin with the bow (sorry Angharad and Rhodri) :P … Of course it may still be exactly that ;-)

BTW These posts should be moved to the New recording information... thread, as Chad's thread seems the wrong place for this news imho. (Good idea - done! Blemished :-D )
