I really ain't got a clue abou this, but my wild guess would be something related to Rain Tree Crow. I know David had a big fight with boys during the RTC recording, especially Karn, and Steve could have been involved too. Later on he moved to America with Ingrid, so brother's 'Ice Age' was extended to the whole decade. Am I close?

Micks book mentions their arguments specifically about religion ! Dave believes and Steve is an atheist (apparantly)
They argued a lot when they were recording Rain Tree Crow.

The rift appeared to be because the band ran out of money (or Virgin wouldn't give them anymore) when recording RTC as they were taking so long to perfect everything, as is their way.

Dave stepped in and paid for the mastering/mixing out of his own publishing royalties which again are mentioned in Micks book. Because it was his money he stopped the other three having any input into the final mastering and mixing of said album. That it appears is what caused Steve to fall out big time with his brother. Sylvian himself has also confirmed elements of this story in interviews over the years.

Blood is thicker than water though and they made up in the end.

Yeah he looses it BIG TIME (re: argument with Mick and Steve BEFORE recording started on RTC). And he sulks (re: photo session with Fripp for First Day release). And he hates being contradicted when he thinks he is completely correct (even if he isn't - again arguments with Steve about religion during RTC sessions) and he SWEARS like an old navvy (ask Richard) - really.
