Groups you've seen in concert

Postby caroline on Sat Mar 15, 2008 8:14 pm

Hi everyone,

Sorry I don't contribute much to the boards, but I love reading everything on here, it's a really nice board and some intelligent debate too :P

So I thought I'd start a kind of Japan/Sylvian related thread on what groups you've seen in concert. It would be interesting to see how similar or different our tastes are. Unfortunately I haven't seen either

So feel free to contribute and I look forward to any replys.

So here's mine

Duran Duran - twice
H20
Thunder
Bon Jovi
5 Star
Deacon Blue
T Pau
Lloyd Cole (not my idea)

Have seen others but can't remember at the moment (can't have been that good!)

p.s. sorry if there has been a link similar to this before but couldn't find one.

I'm horrible at going to concerts because the bands I like don't play around here... all we get are emo/screamo bands. :( Either that or I can't afford them or make it to where they're playing.

I have had the chance to see The Who, though. That was fabulous. :")

Frank Zappa - 1988
Montreux - 1989
Sting - 1991, 1994, 1996, 2003, 2004 & 2005
Robert Fripp String Quartet - 1992 ( several hours in the presence of Fripp -- clinic, question and answer session, dinner, informal chat and performance )
Sylvian / Fripp - 1993
Jewel - 1995
Lyle Lovett - 1996
Dar Williams - 1998
Tish Hinojosa - 1999
Al Kooper & The Rekooperators - 2004
Annie Lennox - 2004
Jeff Beck - 2006
Herbie Hancock - 2007

I've also witnessed a lot of great artists while performing as a member of the opening act. The best of the lot had to be opening for Earth Wind & Fire in 2003. That band was hot and in the pocket. Let's Groove indeed. Luka Bloom was an amazing one man act. Exzene Cervenka (formerly of X) and her ghostly cowboy band put on quite a show. Better Than Ezra seemed like decent guys and played their brand of music extremely well. Lisa Loeb was a sweetheart and her band were tight. The Urban Dance Squad funked the group I was with right out of the club. "Live" were the hottest modern rock group in 1997 and they were so down to earth and humble. My band had been handpicked for a slot on the bill at the stadium gig they played and it was a wonderful opportunity. Thanks "Live".
Also, performing with musicians such as Maria McKee, Steve Forbert and David Poe was like a dream come true. I've been fortunate to be witness and participant to a lot of fine music.

in the past i visited every concert possible, but last year was pretty crap in terms of number of concerts.....apart from going to a festival held about 2 km from my home (way out west in Göteborg, Sweden, pretty good) i only saw two shows last year. but i should think those were the only two really essential; Dolly Parton and David Sylvian. have tried to think of similarities between them....but no, i came up with nothing.

No need to apologise Caroline :D

Well, mine are... let me think...

David Sylvian (twice)
Porcupine Tree (4 times :) )
The Blue Nile
Manic Street Preachers (3 times)
The Verve
Richard Ashcroft (3 times)
Travis - more than once
Keane - also more than once
The Music
Franz Ferdinand
Darren Hayes (twice)
M People
The Beautiful South
Fleetwood Mac
David Bowie
Stereophonics
Turin Brakes (twice)
Raf (Italian singer who did a free concert when I was over there!)

and there might be more than that but I can't remember off the top of my head...

Btw I booked tickets yesterday to see Return To Forever, featuring Chick Corea, in London in July. Theirs was one of the first albums I remember being played when I was little, so I decided to book for me and my dad. (My mother wasn't very impressed, but that's another story.)

Damn, I knew there were some more!

INXS, Jesus Jones, Coldplay, Oasis, The Killers, The Open and Nelly Furtado as well.

I also happened to be in Philadelphia one 4 July when the Pointer Sisters were playing in a park, does that count too...?

Natasha

PS. These 'filters' are funny... the first word in this post was only the one that starts with D and ends with N...

Great topic, Caroline.

Um...all I can think of are:

David Sylvian (twice)
Julian Cope
Michelle Shocked
Maanam (a Polish band)
Jewel
Art Garfunkel

I'm sure there are more, though.

The only one I ever had cancelled on me was The Bravery. I was quite relieved, to be honest...

Just remembered another - Massive Attack at the Hacienda, before they turned it into flats!
