Eurovision

I'm sure most will be spitting at their screens in disgust at the mere mention of this topic, but is anyone other than me at all interested in Eurovision?

I hope Cinema Bizarre represent Germany and win Eurovision.

The thing that actually makes me spit in disgust about Eurovision is Terry Wogan talking over the presenters from the host country - and it's not a language thing because they are usually talking in English anyway, it's SO RUDE!

I'm so glad you said that, Natasha, as I know exactly what you mean. I got shot down in flames on a different forum last year when I said I didn't like Wogan's commentary. I know he can be very funny, and there is a lot about Eurovision to mock, but I do find his humour often descends to the lowest xenophobic denominator.

I hope Cinema Bizarre represent Germany and win Eurovision.

I'd like to see Mick enter for Cyprus! Ah, well....dream on.

Shot down in flames about Terry Wogan?!? What's the world coming to? If any of you also receive emails from Japan Pioneers you'll see I have just seconded an (e)motion - sorry, couldn't resist - on PLAYING NICELY on t'Internet.

Mick enter for Cyprus...

"La Chipre... douze points!" (My A level French is a bit rusty now.) That's a bit like your fantasy band line-ups thread I think! :D

Here in NZ, we have only heard about the puppet entry - was it the Irish entry??? (I couldn't believe what I saw on my TV!)

I usually watch the Eurovision every year, it's like being in a time warp! You get about one decent song a year and a few hilarious ones

The thing that annoys me is the way the voting has nothing to do with how good the songs are and more to do with political issues or who your next door neighbour is. It really has got ridiculous with the Balkan states.

Okay, I know it's not something I should get that worked up about but it makes it sooooo predictable.

Will probably still watch but turn over when the voting starts.

I know what you mean, and it's causing a real crisis, with countries like Italy pulling out. However, I think the Eastern Europeans are often unfairly stigmatised (Greece and Cyprus were voting politically long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Britain, Ireland and Malta have been known to give each other industrial numbers of points, too). One of my best mates is Serb and often votes for Croatia, even though he is no fan of the country politically (anything but - his grandfather was abducted, tortured and murdered by a Croatian mob, so it's not a country he has a lot of love for). However, he often likes the Croatian songs because they're in a musical style that he grew up with, and sometimes sung by a big Yugoslavian star that he recognises (that's another thing - Britain often enters total unknowns or has-beens, while some of the other European countries enter their biggest international stars. If we entered Robbie Williams or Madonna or somebody, we might do a bit better). So I think some of the apparently blatantly biased voting isn't always as political as it appears.

Having said that, it is a problem, and they're going to have to sort it out. There have been rumours that they're considering Eastern and Western heats, a return to expert judging panels instead of public televote, or basing the results on downloads, instead of votes (on the grounds that you're unlikely to pick a novelty song or vote politically if you have to pay more - you'll pick something you actually want to listen to).

Sorry, I take this all far too seriously - I didn't used to be into the contest at all, but several of my friends are Eurovision groupies, and it's rubbed off on me.

It wasn't a Japan forum, I hasten to add. Japansylvian and other Japan/Sylvian forums I've been on tend to have a lovely ambience most of the time. If I ever upset or offend anyone, it's purely unintentional, and do let me know.

Yes, I think Richey Edwards will headline at Glasto with Lord Lucan on backing vocals before that happens! But going back to biased voting, we'd all vote for Mick if he did, wouldn't we, even if the song was poo?

What about Saviour, Are You With Me? as a potential entry...? It's quite a tune!

   Melaszka!!! I cannot believe what I'm reading here - Mick in Eurovision? WTF???? I think I need to go take a sedative to get over the shock! Would you like him to wear national costume too? I'm sure he'd look very, err, nice ... ;-) ;-) ;-)

I have no interest in Eurovision whatsoever, and know absolutely nothing about it, so I'm gonna go take that sedative now ... :smt006 Have fun!!!

Stop it! It's dangerous to feed my delusion.

Yes, Dustin is, indeed, the entry from the Emerald Isle. I heard that it was chosen to try to ensure they didn't win again, as they really can't afford to stage another contest. I actually think it could go all the way, though.

Hey I've just had an idea! :smt115

If you haven't done so already check out David's new album of photos on the Samadhi site, scroll down to the one entitled: 'Control', now is it just my warped sense of humour or does that not remind you of a certain bass player? OK, get that puppet, put it in the silver lame outfit and get MK to do the vocals for it (we won't tell anyone it's him) = massive Eurotrash hit! Fantastique, non?

Good grief! I totally see what you mean! Has anyone ever seen MK and that puppet in the same room together? Dustin the Turkey may have met his nemesis.

I can't believe what we are sending to Eurovision! There was a joke singer on a talk show here that was singing a stupid song and they presented it to Eurovision just for the laughs... And they won! And that's going to go to Budapest for Spain! Kill me now!
