i'm probably a weirdo on here.... but i really do prefer having something new rather than used. I know I'm a wack job.
I get stuff on ebay but i never feel the same about it as I do a new item. I even buy new/used things in amazon, but again if it is used i somehow don't feel the same about it.
As I said.... I'm a wack job. LOL
I think when i finally got andy's thunder cd i paid about 10 bucks for it on amazon. I was mostly just trying to replace the LP version of it that I had from the 80s. I still have a record player but it isn't in a room I use too often.

Hey I have a question. Who else loves the way LPs sound over say CD's? Am I the only one who thinks that CDs sometimes sound a bit tinny?

Me! I much prefer the sound of vinyl versus cd, still buy a lot of vinyl today - I've noticed that many new releases are also available in limited quantities on vinyl - my local record shop has quite an expansive section on new vinyl releases, both LP and 45s - blemish on vinyl sounds better to my ears.

When CDs were first available they all sounded like crap, undernourished sound, like something was missing. They've improved a lot, but to me they still lack a level of depth - vinyl always sounds three dimensional to me, scratchy and crackly though it may be on old records. I still think of CD sound as two dimensional, and adding echo to the mix or boosting bass/treble doesn't help it any.

For me it's most noticeable with an equalizer - you can pretty much play producer with an equalizer when it's vinyl, totally separating out sounds - can't do that in the same way with CDs, things are more 'fixed.'

And I like the idea of someone else having owned something before I got it. Maybe it's the writer in me but I like that history mystery.

I swear if I found a JAPAN album at Goodwill, I'd scream like a little girl and jump around like the energizer bunny! :-D

I'm a collector of LPs as well, there's something really exciting and humble about dropping that needle onto the disc and hearing that first few seconds of white noise and popping...it's just so neat. Before my time, but I still enjoy it!

I have to say that the Goodwill shops by me are dumps as far as vinyl is concerned. Lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd (sp?) and Barry Manilow, don't know why that is. :lol:

But their cassette and cd selections are okay.

The thrift shops are a lot better, at least by me. Seems that people clean out their vinyl collections every once in a while and bring them in, so you find the entire back catalog of an artist - Dio and Rainbow were the ones I last noticed - not my cup of tea but someone will enjoy them.

And I have been known to let out a small scream when I find something I really like. ;-)

I remember a long time ago, probably in the 80's when my then boyfriend and I used to build our music collections by searching in pawn shops, I found a copy of a Japan lp and bought it just because!!! I ended up giving it up with a large pile of other lps (what can I say---I was going through some weird "less is more" phase in the 90's--lol) but have since acquired another thanks to Ebay!!!

I saw an almost perfect copy of Tin Drum in my local shop yesterday, if it wasn't opened I'd say it was brand new! If I didn't already have a nice copy of it that one would be on it's way home with me!

I know what you are talking about! Manilow, Streisand, Sing The Songs Of Christmas, Christian Hyms, that kind of thing. Too many copies of Hall And Oates...

See---now I would have to buy that just for the principle of the thing.....I am like Japan/Sylvian rescue girl here. I would probably do that for DD and Big Country too. In fact, if I hit the pawn shop near work and find any of the aforementioned there, they are probably going home with me, like an abandoned puppy!!! :-D

Girl I can SO relate. Back in the early 90s I dumped all my Duran Duran scrapbooks which I spent the majority of my teens creating. DOH!!!!

That's because the recording system. While the analogic system records all the sound waves, the digital system just takes micro samples of sound - I think it's about 45,000 samples per second aprox. - and when you reproduce all together, human ear can`t really appreciate it's not a continous sound.

I love vinyls too. I buy old and new LPs. I have to say that I don't only love them for their sound, but as a "cult objetc" from a past time I'd would love to live in. In addition, I think that LP artworks are a lot better than most of the cd artworks.
Although I buy a lot of cds too. I like their portability and their clean sound.

I do collect records of some bands as well. probably the most i have are of Duran Duran, but I also have a bunch of Japan and related ones. Like Poisoned said, records are more like a cult object than any other thing. I usually never play them, though try to play all of them at least once. But guess I have gotten lazy since the CD era and I find CDs a lot easier to play and take with me here and there.

That said, I don't own many "new" vinyls, meaning produced now. In the end those are not analogical at all. Those are recorded from the cds most of the times, cause now music is all recorded digitally anyway. And the few I have bought are just for collecting, even more than with the old ones. I like that the old records have a "history" behind them that the new ones don't have.

Still, most of my fave records are the ones I have owned since I was a kid. I sadly don't own many rarities to say I have something very valuable in my collection. But still it has a value for me

Oh and I have a thing for picture discs! And sets of 7"! LOL!
