I Met Steve Vai Last Night, In Seattle!

Postby Sylvian's Beard on Sun Sep 16, 2007 4:02 am

I will write more tomorrow, but here is a pic of me and the man himself!

Image

Aside from the blatant groupies that obscured my view for the manjority of the show, it was PHENOMENAL! Steve is absolutley still on top of his game, and still holding his own, with the new, and his contemporaries.

Absolutley the best concert I have seen so far.

And I got backstage passes...FOR NOTHING!

Me and my friend were chatting with some other people waiting to buy tickets, and they had already gotten theirs and just needed to pick them up....one of the guys had a friend who was with Ibanez guitars and he left them tickets, and backstage passes. I guess the guy could tell how big of fans of Steve Vai we were, so he came up to us after him and his friend had gotten their tickets and he was like...

'You guys big Vai fans?"

"Uh YEAH!"

"Here"

*shock*

couldn't believe it, and still can't.

Wow, I'm just noticing all the typos I made last night...man, I was tired.

To answer your question Steve Vai is one of the greatest guitarists...ever.

He has had tenures with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Alcatrazz, Whitesnake, and a successful solo career.

And not only is Steve Vai an amazing guitarist, his knowledge of music theory is vast and the ability he has to transcribe music into complex musical scores (from rock to orchestral) is undeniably strong.
Sometimes he may come off a little too much as a cross between a "weedly-wee-er" hair band hard rocker and a technical guitar muso, but his passion runs deep and true and that separates him from the vapid 'scales, riffs and licks' rocker boys out there.
Of course, the tenure with Zappa gives him the greatest amount of creedence a musician can have. Not many beings on this planet who happen to play instruments could have cut it with the 20th century's greatest musical genius. And Vai definitely learned well at the foot of the master (Flex-able is proof alone of that), and then took it upon himself to blaze his own trail on his own merits for a varied and interesting solo career.
I do happen to believe that participation in Roth's band, Alcatrazz, and Whitesnake was far beneath Vai's musical superiority, but you know a guy's gotta eat...so he decided to "eat em and smile" :D

Wow, thanks for the lengthy post. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I thought the DLR band with Billy Sheehan, and Steve Vai was magic. Whitesnake was the sort of situation where it was like 'Hey, we need a hotshot guitarist, lets get this guy, and have him play some wanky solos over some old Whitesnake tunes." Alcatrazz was cool but, I really only like two songs off of the album that he played on.

Stevie's Spanking!

Yeah, the guy who gave them to me had a friend who works for Ibanez, and I guess he just wanted to give two kids an amazing night, which he did! Probably the nicest thing a complete stranger has done for me.

I am surprised he didn't want them for his friend, and himself...

Well, at that point I had been up for 19 hours, so I was ready to pass out! lol. I think I nearly fainted waiting in line, I hadn't eaten that much yesterday.

My ONLY gripe about the whole night were the two BLATANT groupies obscuring my view for a small portion of the show. After refusing to sit down, I was thinking about disassembling their chairs or pulling them out from under them when they sat down...blah. I can't stand disrespectful people.

Rhodesia----you were definitely in the right place at the right time!!! I love luck like that!!!

Yes, Steve is definitely one of the greats if not the greatest. I recall my boyfriend back in the day basically idolized him---and probably still does, wherever he is!!! :-D
