Albums of the Year

Postby Tin Bird on Sat Nov 28, 2015 8:38 am

So, with a little over a month to go, thought I'd get the ubiquitous Album of the Year thread going... I'm sure everyone knows my choice for numero uno...

1. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell
2. Colleen - Captain of None
3. Foals - What Went Down
4. Suburban Lawns - 2015 reissue
5. The Lilac Time - No Sad Songs

I can't think of any more right now.... lean year then...

Yeah, you know the Foals album really kind of snuck up on me. I have all of their albums, but I wasn't all that impressed with Holy Fire, so I had quite lukewarm feelings about the new one. I really liked Birch Tree though, so I went for it. Man, I am glad I did...it really is a very strong album. I still like their first two records, but What Went Down is a solid third place. I bet they are great live.

My favourite listens for 2015 (previous years are listed at eternalrhythm.blogspot.com):

Birds Through Fire – Letters To Thurza [Trench Editions]
CFCF – Radiance & Submission [Driftless]
Ben Chatwin – Sleeper Awakes [Village Green]
Floating Points – Elaenia [Luaka Bop]
William Ryan Fritch – The Revisionist [Lost Tribe Sound]
Grasscut – Everyone Was A Bird [Lo Recordings]
Helios – Yume [Unseen]
Hidden Rivers – Where Moss Grows [Serein]
Julia Kent – Asperities [The Leaf Label]
Pye Corner Audio – Prowler [More Than Human]
Bill Seaman – f (noir) [eilean]
Various – Mac-Talla Nan Creag [Firecracker Recordings]
The Weather Station – Loyalty [Paradise of Bachelors]

If pressed, Grasscut would get the nod for my top album of the year.

Boy, the singer for Birds Through Fire sounds a lot like Sylvian.

For me: Yes and no, Robby Aceto indeed sometimes has a kind of Sylvianesk tone in his voice, but in my ears he has a less soft intonation. His album Code is recommended.

Oh, that's Robby Aceto's band...? The guitar player from the Beehive tour. I had a CD of his way back when...I think his band was called Red Letter? Something like that...pretty cool...def. in the No Man, Fripp, Trey Gunn, Sylvian- esque genre.

Indeed, he also had a band called Red Letter, which produced two albums. I only have True North, which I enjoy quite a lot.
