I don't seem to have bought much music this year. What I did - and what I enjoyed - was:

Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Arvo Part - The Very Best of Arvo Part
20th Century Classics - Penderecki
John Taverner - Fragments of a Prayer (Children of Men OST)
Graham Lambkin/Jason Lescalleet - Photographs (Erstwhile)
Kraftwerk - The remastered CDs - Computer Love and Man Machine in particular

Have Arve and Jan's latest on order.

Computer World - yes, sorry - I got muddled with the title and the track.

I'd read the negative comments but, frankly, it sounds great to me. I certainly don't find it fatiguing to listen to - like most over-compressed recordings. It's punchy and clear, yes, but in a good way. That said, I don't have original LPs to compare with.

My feeling on hearing it was of renewed wonder at how these guys had invented / influenced so much of modern music. Same story with Can, whose remasters are brilliant.

I notice that Baht and Chad both mention Daft Punk's new CD. Haven't heard that yet, but be interested to know what you think of it. Funnily enough, UK TV recently showed an old Top Of The Pops from 1977 which had Space - Magic Fly on. Forgotten how much I loved that too - and the lineage to Daft Punk is obvious.

I can't claim to be a big fan of DP's earlier releases, but on this latest cd they focus on the overall sound and slick disco-funk grooves that were so prevalent during the late 70s, all the while employing some truly excellent session musicians: Nathan East and James Genus on bass / John JR Robinson and Omar Hakim on drums. Paul Jackson Jr contributes on rhythm and lead guitar. Nile Rodgers, co-founder of CHIC, also appears on guitar on a few tracks - it is his style that arguably defined the technique of disco guitar.
There are elements of modern techno sprinkled throughout - there is an extremely odd piece 'Touch' with a vocal contribution from noted 70s pop and shlock songwriter Paul Williams that breaks out into a Latin disco groove with a swinging big band horn section - There is a track 'Fragments of Love' that is directly influenced by great "Yacht Rock" bands like The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, which is a very pleasant detour - there is a tribute to Giorgio Moroder - and if one obtains the bonus cut 'Horizon', you'll hear some moody pedal steel guitar by session-ace Greg Leisz over top of a spooky Pink Floyd-ish track.
It's refreshing to know that a new generation of music listeners are getting a chance to actually hear quality musicianship rather than the manufactured stuff that passes for pop music nowadays. {{I know I sound like a grumpy old man}} :-)

Baht sums it up pretty well. They just don't make records like this anymore, I guess thats why it stands out. Yes there are throwbacks like the Paul Williams track (I always think of that muppet movie) but it also has collaborations with the Strokes & Animal Collective members. The final tracks, Doin' it Right/Contact are very infectious and positive, leaving you with a feeling of optimism & faith. Thats something greatly lacking from our hero. Cheers to a better year in that regard.

mm, that bill callahan record is great. how did I miss that one.

Lists like this make me realize how quickly time moves... A lot of the CD's and Lp's I thought I had bought in 2013 are actually 2012 releases...

Some favourite releases from this year:
- Takagi Masakatsu - Wolf Children
- Chvrches - The bones of what you believe
- Rowwen Heze - Hemel op Aarde
- Lloyd Cole - Standards
- Marta Ratkje - Voice
