What other music does everyone like?

Postby Darkest Dreamer on Sun Jul 30, 2006 5:30 pm

Funny thing is, I couldn't listen to Japan for the last 20 years. I only just started listening to some of my old 80s music again and enjoying it. I overplayed the hell out of all of it in the 80s.

I had a good time being a teenager in the 80s and I had fun, (many graveyard parties) although high school sucked in a lot of ways also and looking different and being 'new wave' wasn't really all that accepted at the time where I grew up. A lot of jocks wanted to beat up my boyfriend Ed 'The Spider-head' (he loved The Cure) and his other friends. I remember having to run out of the graveyard fearing we were going to get killed by a group of jock a-holes so many times.

Anyway, I loved the 90s the best. I had the best time then. I loved the music and acid jazz is still one of my favourites. I love classic Jazz, classic Rock, Acid Jazz and grunge rock. I really like St.Germain and Ronny Jordan.

What does everyone else listen to here besides Japan and DS?

hhmm i didn't care for the 90s at all.... crap hip hop music and all the boy bands? Ugh not too mention being in grad school through a bunch of it.
I loved the 80s aside from school sucking. I loved duran duran back then and was totally into them to the point where the rest of the world really ceased to exist (thank god).

Music I like other than davids.... i'm not a HUGE Japan fan. I love david most of all...
anyway... i love harold budd, tori amos, loreena mckennitt, lots of new age music... love celtic sounds. I'm starting to really like a lot of ryuichi's stuff.

I love tons of stuff, I fellin in love with the underground hip hop movement in the early 80s, the drum machines, the DJs cutting up 2 copies of funk or rock breaks, the German inspired Electro hip hop etc.
For Pop music I had a Major Madonnna Obsession for a while, along with Prince, Michael Jackson & Billy Idol.
Late 80s was Rare groove & then a lot of raving to various forms of house and breakbeat music into the 90s.

I listen to and buy way to much music to list here but some of my Faves are

The Associates (hence my s/n)
The Smiths
Cocteau Twins
H.I.M
Primus
No Doubt
Mike Patton
Ulver
Meshuggah
Barry Adamson
The Cardigans
Dillinger Escape Plan
Peaches
Le Tigre
James Brown
David Bowie
Kool Keith

oh god, you name it, i like it, unless it sucks. :D

I can't listen to Japan. I came to love DS after his Japan years. The only Japan I've really listened to is "Ghosts". The rest of the Japan music just kinda makes me cringe (I know some of you will want to hit me for saying that!).

Anyway, here's a random assortment of music from my iTunes:

a perfect circle, frank black, pentaphobe, dead can dance, patsy cline, miles davis, tori amos, pixies, jane's addiction, VAST, ween, camaron de la isla (i LOVE LOVE LOVE flamenco), tweaker, django rheinhardt, lush, duran duran, cranes, caetano veloso, kate bush, cheb i sabbah, ekova... i could go on and on. i've always loved music.
It is all entirely perfect--it is as it should be.

As far as what i listen to, too much to list here, but I can tell you it includes alot of what has already been listed in this thread and other threads within this site. My top faves are:

Beatles
Split Enz
Duran Duran
Japan
David Sylvian
Neil Finn

............followed by many of the 80's bands/artists, and several 60's and 70's bands. I also enjoy some of the 90's artists such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Collective Soul, NIN, STP, etc.

If I listed everything, there would be no more room for anyone else to post---lol!!!!

Cheb i Sabbah is Algerian, but he left the country in the sixties. He's a dj mostly. He mixes native music with modern beats. It's pretty good stuff. I've got friends who are belly dancers and they turned me on to him.

Traditional Algerian/Arabic music mixed with Modern beats = Rai

and he probably left his home to avoid being killed by Fundamentalists who dont like what they see as a perversion of their music.

Hasni - is one who was murdered for making the same music and

the King of Rai ( who you really need to check out) KHALED (my fave)

Has lived in France as an exile too.

It is a scary thing. Didn't something similar happen to Ofra Haza, her husband had her killed because she didn't conform to what his culture considered "acceptable"?
