Best Music of 2009

Postby Adrian on Mon Nov 23, 2009 3:54 am

Hello all,

This year I have a top 11, even though I bought way more music (as usual). Also, I realise it’s a bit early, but to my knowledge there won’t be another release this year that will change my list, so I thought I’d post it now.

01. Supersilent – 9 [cd] (http://www.runegrammofon.com)
02. David Sylvian – Manafon [cd] (http://www.samadhisound.com)
03. Keith Rowe and Sachiko M. – Contact [2cd] (http://www.erstwhilerecords.com)
04. Bass Communion – Litany [12” vinyl ep] (http://www.tonefloat.com)
05. Circulasione Totale Orchestra – Bandwidth [3cd] (http://www.runegrammofon.com)
06. Keith Rowe and Toshimaru Nakamura – {untitled – erstlive 008} [cd] (http://www.erstwhilerecords.com)
07. Dirk Serries – Microphonics VII [12”one sided vinyl ep] (http://www.tonefloat.com)
08. Sweet Billy Pilgrim – Twice Born Men [cd] (http://www.samadhisound.com)
09. Polwechsel and John Tilbury – Field [cd] (http://www.hathut.com)
10. Shinkei and Luigi Turra – YU [cd] (http://www.nonvisualobjects.com/label)
11. Jon Hassell – Last Night the Moon Came Dropping It’s Clothes in the Street [cd] (http://www.ecmrecords.com)

I would also like to mention:
- Kyteman – The Hermit Sessions [cd] (http://www.kyteman.com)
- Unas – Only for the Brave [cd ep] (http://www.myspace.com/unasdeath)
- [discard] – Are You My Mummy? [my remix of Steven Wilson’s ‘Abandoner’] (pm me for more info)

The only thing I was really excited by (and bought) this year was the Pet Shop Boys single, 'Love etc.'

Samadhi have an hour long piece by Akira Rabelais for free download, and they have also announced some of their releases for 2010. Tonefloat recently did the same and damn: 2010 looks to become an even better year for music than 2009...

I would like to mention 2 loose tracks.
One is 'Papillon' by Editors - FANTASTIC!
and the other the remix FSOL made of Oasis´ track ´Falling Down - 23 monstrous minutes!

Have to say, I am a big fan of the first two Editors albums...esp. An End Has A Start..thought the guitar work on Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors was brilliant. That said, the new synth sound has really left me in the cold. While I appreciate that they are trying out a new direction, it really sounds limp and unoriginal to me. Like some second rate Depeche Mode clone band like Red Flag or Camouflage.

The concept of what could be considered "Best" is always so subjective and seldom the most popular among the masses. Here are the releases from 2009 that I've enjoyed listening to the most:

Sting - If On A Winter's Night
David Sylvian - Manafon
Five Peace Band (John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride & Vinnie Colaiuta) - Live
Philip Aaberg, Tracy Silverman & Eugene Friesen - Three Part Invention (improvisations on Bach)
Rosanne Cash - The List
Maxwell - Blacksummers'night
Polwechsel & John Tilbury - Field
Lyle Lovett - Natural Forces
Jon Hassell - Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street
Madeleine Peyroux - Bare Bones
AMM - Trinity
Willie Nelson - American Classic

Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom EP (not a full album, but a 4 track teaser from their forthcoming release, Heligoland)
