Difficult question…. But about modern music I’d probably say:

The Smashing Pumpkins
Bob Dylan
Japan
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Einstürzende Neubauten

(a bit schyzofrenic, I know)

That list may change tomorrow, who knows.

And I gotta add Bowie to that, of course, and mr Waits.

JAPAN (can I include the solo / collaboration stuff or is that cheating???)
RADIOHEAD (still totally amazing - and together - after all these years!)

Gets a bit tough now as - for me - the rest would probably be more about albums than loving EVERYTHING they do but the list would include...

ROXY MUSIC
THE CULT
DURAN DURAN

....however these are battling for medal places with The Doors, The Smiths, Siouxsie, Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Joy Division, Grace Jones... the list goes on....

I have a love/hate relationship with all these kind of things

Well, there are more than 5, but I have to be fair, so these are the bands I've been (...and I'm still...) obsessed with
(in no particular order)

Duran Duran
Japan
The Beach Boys
Placebo & Suede - maybe I don't play their albums to death like when I was a teenager, but I definetely think that my life would have been totally different without them, and I still have a deep love and passion about them.
The Jesus and Mary Chain
The Raveonettes and Delays are my lattest adquisitions LOL

Thank goodness you said specifically "bands", cause if I had to put the solo artists as well I could have died!!

The Beatles
The Cure
Rain Tree Crow
Porcupine Tree
C.S.I.
And, although these are not 'proper' bands, Bass Communion and Nine Horses.

Tough one but, based on the condition of releasing 2-3 solid albums as a minimum requirement, here goes (not including Japan - now, that would be cheating!):

Cocteau Twins (4AD period)
Red House Painters
Rachel's
Low
Suede (Bernard Butler period)

I almost never listen to bands. They often lack the intimacy I look in music.

Nine Horses
Savage Garden
Vacuum
Hood

What an interesting thing to say. Care to elaborate?
