Fantasy band line-ups

If you were putting together your dream band, which musicians would you have in it?

NB you are allowed a maximum of 1 member of Japan and try to avoid using musicians that have worked extensively together before.

Hmmm interesting topic, I would probably have a very strange line up, but here goes....

I would have a vocal duo set up, with both Moire Brennan (from Clannad) and David Sylvian on vocals. (I always think they should work together!)

Would want someone who could play a moody, dark guitar sound.... so I am going for Richie Sambora - from Bon Jovi. (Just think the live versions of Wanted Dead or Alive, and you will probably get where I am coming from)

Mick Fleetwood, although he is an not pleasant on the eye kinda guy, he is a great drummer, - creates wonderful atmosphere.

For a bassist, would go with John Taylor, - mainly because I can't think of any others....

For keyboards/piano, - if I could change one part of history, it would be that Paul Hewson from Dragon is still with us. His playing and David's vocals would have been a multi-platinum seller!!

So ....

Vocals - Moire Brennan and David Sylvian
Guitar - Richie Sambora
Drums - Mick Fleetwood
Bass - John Taylor
Piano - Paul from Dragon, or Joshua Kadison (he is a very fine player!)

David (obviously) on vocal tints and electronics
Arve Henriksen on trumpet and treatments
Helge Sten (a.k.a. Deathprod) on Audio Virus (which is electronics)
Francisco Lopez: environmental recordings
Bernhard Guenter: Cellotar improv
Autechre: clickety-click
Production and mix: Steven Wilson and Bass Communion

Hey I can dream can't I? :-)

I've got an interesting one I think, a triptych of Richards!

Richard Ashcroft: vocals
Signor Barbieri: synths (OBV)
Richey James Edwards: guitars and lyrics

What d'you think?

Well here's my improv line up:

Vocals: Scott Walker
Guitar: Jimmy Page
Bass: Rick Danko
Piano: Katsuyuki Itakura
Drums/Percussion: Steve Jansen

They can all argue amoungst themselves as to who gets the honour of writing the lyrics! (Except for Rick who's sadly no longer with us, on this particular level of reality ... :( )

Hm. I can't quite make my mind up. I actually find I don't want to use a lot of my favourite artists (including David), partly because for this exercise I'm giving technical instrumental proficiency more weight than songwriting skills, and ability to work in a team more weight than uncompromising artistic vision.

I'm most definite about my rhythm section:

Bass: Mick Karn

Drums: Hamid Mantu (of Transglobal Underground and formerly of Furniture)

It's a bit shakier beyond that, but I've settled on:

Keyboards: Tori Amos

Guitar: Jimmy Page (with you 100% on this, Astronaut!)

The one thing I can't settle on is a vocalist. Perhaps Aretha Franklin, with Trio Bulgarka on backing vocals?

Like your choices Japanfan! Mick on bass - classic, I wanted to choose him for bass (OBV) :smt035 but definitely have to have Steve on drums/percussion so the rhythm section has to suffer a bit ... anyway my dream group already existed, think they were called Japan! x

So true... *sigh*. Now, all we need is a reunion concert. Also I want to lose 2 stones in 2 minutes... oh, sorry, I was dreaming again!

IF ONLY Natasha ... Now that's a really good dream! If they did manage to come to some arrangement and tour, where should they go? and what would the set list be? Hmmm ... *Astronaut drifts off in to dreamland again ...* :smt015
