Moonshadow Comic arrived!

The Comic I bought from Ebay, Moonshadow, has arrived! I like it very much. Strange story (But cool) And beautiful drawings and the artist does a great job of making the character look just like David Sylvian! I am very interested in the whole series- I have part 12 of volume one, wheres 1-11? I'll have to look that up!

Very neat! I think I may have seen scans from the comic before... just another thing for me to spend money on!

Hi,

A warning. Before you start buying the rest of series, in case you don't know, does not feature Mr Sylvian. I do believe Moonshadow is transformed into Mr Peter Murphy for one episode! Sorry, if you already knew this.

You might want to check your local comic shop (if you have one). Moonshadow (the entire series) was issued as a graphic novel, containing all the original cover art for each individual comic. But be careful, there was a reissue where the artist changed some of the drawings that looked like Sylvian; I believe he was requested to do this.

What is the story behind this? I've had this comic for years and never knew it was (or was rumored to be) Sylvian-related.

From an article in Bamboo 13, brief interview with chief illustrator Jon J. Muth.

"The decision to use David Sylvian as reference was a purely visual one. The pictures (taken from Fin Costello's "Sons of Pioneers") represented what I felt was a powerful visual starting point for the emotions the story projected. It's precisely because he is not well known here (the comic is by New York based Marvel Group) that I felt I could use these images without disturbing the fictional dream.

At the same time, I am a fan of David Sylvian's music and if this leads a few more people to find out more about his work I am happy to have done that. He is brilliant."

I think (but I'm not certain) that both Opium Arts, Ltd. and Fin Costello were involved in getting the images changed. That's about all I know of this comic and how it relates to David.

if it were opium arts it probably reflected something of what david wanted.... however i can understand the photographer not wanting his images used without consent. Although in this post modern art world it could have been a case of "appropriation" and not copying or stealing.

I think the drawings/paintings in the comic are beautiful... The artist just captures David Sylvian's image in them!
