Some Kind Of Fool

Anyone know why this was left off Gentlemen Take Polaroids?

I remember when I bought the album and the sticker telling me Burning Bridges had replaced it. I thought it just meant that Some Kind of Fool had been renamed!

Shame, as BB was already a b-side on the 'Gentlemen' EP.

I think it was just too long, Virgin wanted to edit it down put Sylvian protested, it was a scheduled single release also but got pulled probarbly for the same reason

Bern, I never heard a story about it being too long. The reasons I've heard of are that the group had second-thoughts about it mainly because they felt it was too similar to "The Other Side Of Life". The other reason was apparently David wasn't sure about the French parts of the song.

Then it was planned as a single in '82 and a press release went out early for the Japanese magazines with the catalogue number VS554, and there were some stories about this published. However that time David decided he wanted to re-record the song with Pierre Barouh, who he'd got to know when he accompanied Steve on the Takahashi tour, so the group released 'Nightporter' instead. Unfortunately David didn't get to re-record the song with Pierre (this was scheduled for early '83) so it was left in the vaults.

In the late 1990s SKOF was slated for release on a Japan compilation I was involved with putting together - again it was assigned a catalogue number etc, but David decided to include it on "Everything & Nothing", so that was that.

^ Very interesting answer.

Some Kind Of Fool would have made a good single - especially as would be seen as a 'new' song and may have charted high. I always thought Nightporter was a strange choice. As good as it was, it wasn't an Ariola re-release but was still an old track.

I always thought ' aint that Peculiar' replaced it on polaroids, which Incidently one of the bands weakest tracks.

hmm, but that song was easily one of Marvin Gaye's strongest tracks (among so many strong tracks)....just as was the case with attempting a cover of 'I Second That Emotion', those british kids wearing makeup and funny haircuts surely had no business at all going anywhere near such a soulful track - a Motown classic:

Well 'baht',
This time i have to disagree, though i love a lot of the Motown classics the original of this song was never one of my favourites.
A bit too bland and pedestrian unlike the Japan version which was more enhanced by the tribal beat and the crescendo towards the end before the fade away.
Only my opinion of course.. Just to add it's the opposite of what i think of 'I second that emotion'.

got to agree with StephenF, and Japan used to do a cracking live version of it as well

In my opinion the best cover Japan ever did was ' All tomorrow's Parties ' by some distance too. It fitted so well on QL and was so much better than the original.

I have to agree, All Tommorows Parties was one of my favourite songs and their best cover, even got me to buy the Velvet underground and Nico cd, which is now one of my top 10 all time albums IMO...

According to John Punter, David went off SKOF at the last minute and it was pulled from the album...
