I don't really collect any artist but I do try and keep up with the latest releases by artists I like. If I find a new favorite, typically an artist who's been around a while but is new to me, I'll try and pick up most of the back catalog of standard releases. I've had luck doing that at used CD stores, thrift shops, and record conventions, but it is a very hit or miss thing. I've had better luck using Amazon marketplace sellers - new, still sealed items that even with shipping charges cost less than the asking price at Amazon (especially imports).

The main reason I managed to accumulate somewhat of a Japan/David collection was being able to acquire things when they first came out - easy to get a collection when things are readily available, lol.

For many years I was a total completist when it came to collecting Japan vinyl and I built up a quite impressive collection in that time. Against my better judgement I actually let some of the prize pieces go during the late 80's although, I still have 70% or so of the original collection still tucked away now, and still on occasion get them out and think back to the day.

I keep thinking that I will make a concerted effort to weed some of the unessesary duplicate items out (far to many really but the result of the completist bug) and attempt to obtain some of the prize pieces I (foolishly) let go again.......

But.........apart from Japan, the band who I have collected from then and still to this day is........

'Joy Division'..................

The value of some of the rarer pieces since the release of 'Control' has proved tha investment in Joy Division vinyl was a wise choice, although I have no intention of letting any of them go. The market for Joy Division items has not diminished at all.

Compared to what I paid for 'Dont' Rain On My Parade' German Picture sleeve back in the day, and what I would get for a copy now, it pales in comparison when I was paying £60-80 in the same era for copies of 'An Ideal For Living' which now regulalry go for the £800 and above mark on e-bay.

I am not really too into having stuff, I am very transient, and have pretty much gone digital, and am very happy with that. Once upon a time I had some very cool Japanese magazines from the late 70s/early 80s with tons of pics of Japan. Had a great photobook called YMOmiyage (I think) with tons of pictures of YMO, some of Japan. I had all the Japan albums on vinyl, and a lot of those maxi-singles, the 12 inch ones, and Sakamoto/YMO/Ippu-do vinyl as well. That stuff got lost around 1986. I still had some of the vinyl, and I gave it to my brother, who has recently gotten back into vinyl.

The two things I have now that I will hold on to, for personal reasons, are the World is Everything tour book, which is just a gorgeous piece of art, and Steve's DVD, since I was there, and can even see myself in the end credits! But these are both about two very special memories of my time living in Japan, so kind of where my life, and theirs, I guess, intersected.

egads1 :o Good luck replacing them! They've gone a bit crazy with releases if you want to count all the EPs, singles, diff versions, live shows etc.

Sucks about the old vinyl tho!! :?
