Yup, I've always loved 'Rhodesia', there's just something haunting about it...

Runner up would be 'Sometimes I feel so low' - there's something very strutty and funky and almost Bowie-esque about it.....

I voted for Obscure Alternatives; the sound of David moaning and screaming does something to me... ;)

As Assemblage was the first album I bought, Rhodesia is probably the first Japan song that really captured me and got me hooked. For that reason it always means so much to me....I find it quite sad in a reflective sort of way - still havent a clue what it's about though! I just love the feel of the song...

Hmm interesting the main love of my life from that album is overwhelmingly Surburban Berlin. Can't beat a shouty chorus and descending geetar - well I say so anyway.

I remember being slightly fond of the title track too.
"This island of blue
Where life clings to your hands
Like water and sand
Will loose it's way when you're gone"

The Tenant, becus it's sad to death. plus i adore the join-in's of new instruments. followed by Rhodesia and Suburban Berlin i guess.

Aplolgies for ressurecting an old thread, but I really like Suburban Berlin from this album, right from when I first heard it on a cassette of Assemblange I bought from a market stall. I have a thing for Weimar-era Berlin, which helps, but also the chorus is great.

Not mad keen on Rhodesia - Japan didn't seem to have a handle on Reggae in the same way that other bands of roughly the same era such as The Clash and Bauhaus did. I don't think Bauhaus went completely reggae at any point, but they certainly co-opted the basslines to great effect.
