Some Small Hope

Postby BeehiveSecrets on Sat Aug 11, 2007 7:48 pm

hey everyone.. i just discovered this beautiful little collaboration David did in 1986 on Virginia Astley's album Hope in a darkened heart, the song Some small hope.. oh it's so angelical and beautiful. That lady apparently is 3 years younger than David but she sounds like if she was 10 or something haha.. their voices make such a beautiful contrast. oh darn it i adore this song! let me know what you think of it :)

I had it somewhere on tape. I bought the album. No idea where it is now. It's not a strong album - Some Small Hope is the strongest track on it. Worth getting, I think, but unremarkable. Produced by Sakamoto.

I'd have to disagree with the comment that it's not a strong album - it depends what you are looking for. Beautiful, English whimsy, it's right up there. Her "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure" is the real classic though.

Fact fans might like to know that Sakamoto produced the first five tracks on the "Hope In A Darkened Heart" album that "Some small Hope" comes from. He also plays keyboards.

Fact fans might also like to know that Virginia's dad was Ted (or Edwin) Astley who He wrote music for many British television series of the 50s and 60s, including The Adventures of Robin Hood, Danger Man, Department S, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Saint, The Baron and The Champions.

yeah, thank sonic_chronicler for the track haha i wasn't quick enough to share it myself!..

i don't know, i'll keep the album - won't deleted it and stuff, but it's not a true miracle or anything. but that song with David is ugh just so wonderful! my top song of the month easily!

in addition to the 'fact fan' thing - Virginia had many brothers who had to do with the music industry in one or another way, as far as i can remember her sister married Pete Towshend

She has one brother, Jon who remastered a lot of the Who's back catalogue. He was also an artist in his own right, releasing two albums. He mainly runs his own studio now.

wow now that is a different type of track for david. Really really sweet and pretty. It would have been a great addition to the movie Legend.

I personally like it when David stretches his vocals and sings in a variety of ranges. I have to admit I soooooo love his newer work but I feel there is a lacking in vocal pushing the envelope. His lyrics definately make up for that though.

Is this song from the late 80s by any chance?

beautiful, isn't it! i told you :)

it's from 1986.

yeah his voice is so pure in this.. his NH has this um old-guy sound which ain't bad, but makes you think of a stressed and tired David instead of the elf jumping on flowers with his Thumbelina while listening to Some small hope haha..

It reminds me a lot of the track "Goodnight" he did with Akiko Yano a few years before that. Probably just because of the male vs female vocal thing.

The song is lovely, I think Astley's lyrics suit Sakamoto's music very well, and David's vocal is great. However, I'm not fond of Astley's voice and have preferred if it was just David singing; I don't like the contrast between their voices. It's the best song on the album, imo.

She was popular in the country of Japan during the 80s, often see her pics in the Japanese mags from that time.
