One of my oldest friends killed himself around the time of the release of 'Hope In A Darkened Heart' and 'Some Small Hope' was the track that opened up my heart to the loss. I was 21 or so at the time and when I heard this song I began to cry and cry and cry and could not stop. It remains to this day a reminder of my friend, Martin and how I miss him after all these years.

I've got a lump in my throat after reading that missouriman. Such a sad story :(

I think you've found 'Goodnight', which is on an album by Akiko Yano (Ai Ga Nakucha Ne, if my memory hasn't gone to bed before me), who happens to be mrs Sakamoto.

Yes, just realised I'd missed a bit of the thread...anyway, both Some small hope and Goodnight are on you tube - but not very good sound quality though. I didn't realise Akiko was Ryu's wife...sorry mrs. Sakamato! :?

Some Small Hope will be re-released in Japan on September 30th.

I'll buy this!
also, I saw Akiko Yano on NHK TV Thursday.

she plays at Tokyo Jazz 2009 (fes) now.
Ryuichi and Akiko got divorced. She said nothing about him on TV. but in January, Ryuich appeared on TV and said "ah, ex ( moto-oku in Japanese)" because a jingle of that TV show was made by Akiko Yano. that was very funny.

it seems like they look happier than before, so it was a good order I guess.

Some Small Hope sounds like some church music, but Virgina's voice is very cute.

My fav song at the moment... I love David's vocal in '86 the most.
I am new here :"> And I can't speak English very well.

Just an update on the reissue, 'Hope In A Darkened Heart' (which features 'Some Small Hope') was released in Japan on the Hayabusa Landing label on 30th September as planned. There is a question mark however hanging over the legality of the reissue. Virginia certainly knew nothing about it.

I really love 'Some Small Hope' and its amazing how popular it has remained considering how quickly the song came together.
Composed by Ryuichi one day, Virginia was busy working on the lyrics at the breakfast table the following day.
David came to the Wool Hall studios (approx 26th August 1986) at mid-day to record his vocals and was gone again by teatime.
It all happened that quickly. 8)

My CD-version of this fine album is released by Warner Music Japan/Lost House (HYCA-3023. The nice thing about the cover is that it has the same type of rough material as the original LP had (yeah, bought that when it was released). The CD has one bonus-track: A Day, A Night/Le Song.

This track is on the Congeries rarities boot from 2001. I would be glad to share this with anyone who is interested.

Those who have never got/heard Some Small Hope, Virginia Astley has a Bandcamp-page with most of her work, both digital and (in one case) physical: https://virginiaastley.bandcamp.com/
