tigran hamasyan rules. he's the only one that brought the melody. David should start hanging out with that guy. :D

Chad, were you able to hear the performance somewhere? Has anyone else heard anything...even some snippets? Have there been broadcasts or bootlegged recordings, possibly video? I'm anxious to hear what Mathieu, Fennesz and Sylvian offered up during their performance.

Thank you depeon. :-) Well, It looks as though these three manipulators of sound are just going to have to release some product at some point. Such sonic sound sculptures must be difficult to describe in common terminology. :-)

And being a drummer myself - one who also has spent more and more time away from behind the kit - I can enthusiastically relate to Mr Mathieu's tale of how he is rediscovering the joy of playing.

Thanks again.

Thanks!
I'm probably biased, but I get the feeling that the three fellas have put lots of passion, dedication, and joy in this project.

Hey Baht, just noticed this post. I didn't mean to ignore. It looks like someone put this on soundcloud but I still haven't heard it.

Melody is Tigran's forte. His new album is absolutely fantastic. Its only available in france at the moment but if you look hard enough I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. :) He does have some promotional stuff and a new single out now. His new video gives you a good feel for the record. Watch the whole thing... the best bits are at the end.

More importantly he is currently on tour with a rare north american leg. Here is a youtube of the Shadow Theater show in its entirety. My favorite moments are betwwen 1:12 - 1:28 (Pt 2 - Alternative Universe) They absolutely kill it.

Anyways, if you like whats happening in progressive jazz at the moment you shouldn't miss the opportunity to check these guys out. Cant wait to see the show...

Chad, when I asked if you were able to hear the performance somewhere, I expected to you reply yes. As you felt so inclined to make such a definitive statement that this pianist was the 'only one that brought the melody', I assumed that you had been able to hear every performance by every artist. How else could you feel so confident to proclaim that one artist was the 'only one' who had 'brought the melody'? Did you hear every performance at Punkt?
What I hear when I listen to this pianist is a conventional fusion between classical and jazz. If conventional is the thing one enjoys, then one shall most likely enjoy it.

More importantly, I must ask, has anyone else been able to listen to the soundcloud clips? My attempts to access these links have not been successful.

Baht,

I had the same results on the soundcloud. But honestly I wasn't inspired enough by the youtube clips to care. Maybe you need to create a SC account and log in prior to clicking the link? Maybe David caught wind and had them taken down? <shrug>

I agree that tigran road song clip is conventional but thats the promotional single. The rest of the album has a experimental/punk feel to it. If you are the TMonk fan that you claim you should absolutely dig this guy. But whatever you guys... your loss. Someday you'll figure it out. :) <--joke ...not to be taken seriously...

wow... I cant believe that goes on for a buck o'nine. Nice clapping solo at the end. I guess thats just to high art for me. Its like nobody wanted to take the lead throughout the entire performance. That would have benefitted greatly with a little rehearsal time... and some actual composition. but hey what do I know. :)

Indeed. I'm sure it was rehearsed.

Thanks so very much for reposting the performances.
I figured that I needed to hear the full content to determine whether KH is something I can appreciate. After giving it two listens, I must admit that I still do not comprehend why the recitation of that material has been deemed necessary - and I actually wound up listening past that voice during those certain sections and focusing my attention on the contributions of Mathieu, Fennesz and Sylvian (who sounds as if he is bravely attempting an imitation of Mr. Tilbury. :-) ) There are some very promising moments....but I can't get past the addition of the recitation - the significance of the monologue simply eludes me.

Hey! you have eventually come to the correct conclusion.
Creating an artistic expression devoid of a dominating ego is the aim of the musicians who work within the concept of Electro-Acoustic Improvisation. One could consider their art as musical socialism, a communal experience where all players contribute equally and only occasionally shall a performing member of an ensemble dare to take a relatively dominant role - but then that member will cede to the others.
