A Song for David

Okay, what song would you like to hear (whether it's his style or not) Mr. Sylvian sing?

I'd like to hear him sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water".

... Blue Christmas or any of my favorite Christmas songs.... It would be a guilty pleasure, I know!

Alabama Song (Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht)
You young 'uns may have heard Bowie or Morrison singing it...

The lyrics start...

"Show me the way to the next whisky bar
Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why... "

"What are you doing the rest of your life" i have only heard women jazz singers take this on. I want to hear a moody luscious man sing it... oh i know one... D.S.

What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? is a great choice....yet you've never heard Sinatra sing it? Wow. Sting also recorded a nice lush version of the song with trumpeter Chris Botti.
I had always wished that Sylvian was the vocalist for King Crimson's "One Time". I've always liked that smooth bossa nova feel in 6/4 and the melodic guitar lines. And every time I happen to listen to it, I think how it would have been much better suited for Sylvian's deeper resonance.
The song's music was actually conceived in early 1993 by Fripp, Gunn and drummer Jerry Marotta (who unjustly received no credit for the song's exquisite rhythm!) This was during the period they were working on The First Day with Sylvian. It was a shame that the musical ideas weren't placed in Sylvian's hands. So that will always be the song that I wish Sylvian had sung.

I agree about the last choice, I think David could do a lovely version.

I'd like to hear him do something unexpected, outside of the ballad/moody thing. He once sang the Stones "Heartbreaker" and I have a strange urge to hear him do something a bit out there, like Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." Seriously! I think it would be fun to hear!

He's had a fondness for Motown, maybe a version of "Tears of a Clown" or Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin?"

I'd like to hear what he could do with a Peter Gabriel song - back to the ballads with "Hear Comes The Flood" or a reconstruction of "In Your Eyes", "I Have The Touch" - something along those lines.

And a very simple arrangement of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" would be nice.

Interesting question and I like the answers so far. Here are some other ideas:

Are You Lonesome Tonight---Elvis

If you could Read my Mind----Gordon Lightfoot (I think he and David sound very similar sometimes)

Secret Garden---Bruce Springsteen

Check it out!!!!

Oh yes, 'Are you lonesome tonight' is really beautiful and I also like 'Can't help falling in love with you'.

'Fragile' - Sting
And the song 'The girl from Ipanema'
Or maybe 'New York, New York' - Frank Sinatra

And I'd LOVE to hear him sing Christmas songs....mistletoe included...

"Woman in Chains" by Tears for Fears. I know that Roland Orzabal is a massive Sylvian fan and I have a sneaking suspicion he half wrote this song with our hero in mind.

"This House" Alison Moyet

"Rent" Pet Shop Boys

Basically any classic torch song

but it would also be fum to hear him cover something that is totally and utterly not him, picked at random, because you know he would totally deconstruct it and create an entirely new piece of music from it

I'd like to hear him sing "Corcovado". "Happy Birthday" would be another good one.
It is all entirely perfect--it is as it should be.
