Robert Fripp and Theo Travis Talk Sylvian

Talk about anything David Sylvian related.

Robert Fripp and Theo Travis Talk Sylvian

Postby heartofdavid on Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:15 am

This was posted the other day on several Yahoo groups, thought I'd post it here in case anyone was interested.

Robert Fripp updated his diary, including a discussion he and Theo had over lunch - one of the subjects was David. Funny.

I hope this wasn't the session that was talked about a few years ago.

Not too hard to read between Fripp's thinly veiled lines here. Seems like he is ready and willing to work with Sylvian anytime.

David, ask him!

Thanks so much to heartofdavid for making us aware of Fripp's latest diary.
I would have loved to have heard Fripp ripping through Banality of Evil --- the song could have used a little more crunch in certain spots...it's a great track but a little monotonous in presentation --- it's like a steady flat line throughout and all the interesting avant-jazz horn licks still couldn't help to give the piece some much needed dynamics. a little bit more in the drum and guitar department would have done wonders to break up the repetitive backing loop.
Unfortunately I don't foresee Sylvian and Fripp working together anytime soon as Sylvian has a new disc on the not so distant horizon and Fripp will be touring and recording with Crimson this year ---- Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastellotto and Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree's astounding drummer).

Mrs Fripp is still a babe. There. One for the guys as opposed to the 'oh I'd do Steve/Dave/Mick/Richard/Anyone vaguely connected with Japan' type comments from the girls.

Ha!

that's kind of the whole of Snow Borne Sorrow for me. I don't think David's always right in pursuing what he feels worth pursuing. Rain Tree Crow is a masterpiece; SBS, I feel he had better relinquished control and left the final mixes to Burnt (Jaki's drumming included).

I'm getting a bit off-topic here, but there was a wonderful negative review of Everything and Nothing by Ian Penman years ago, which neatly encapsulated David's over-controlling traits for me.

remaining on the off-topic course and speaking of Jaki (Liebezeit), there was a curious information on Burnt's part in a Wire 'Invisible Jukebox' interview with him, where he concluded that David was unhappy with the original drum tracks for SBS simply because he couldn't feel certain time signatures ('The Librarian' especially, being in 5/4) so they ended up sounding 'wrong' to him (and Steve), which led to them being replaced by Steve's own drum parts. for me it was an endearing insight into human imperfection (and a possible thumbs-up for formal musical education as well).
I remember Burnt expressing a mild regret for this, but otherwise having understanding for their differing musicianly backgrounds and mindsets.

I apologize if offended by my remark.
I just felt those huge cups are really cute.
and godisinthesilences, thanks for the info, those pots are very nice, I'd like to plant morning glory in it if I had one, recently I sowed seeds.

LOL E.T I know you didn't mean bra cups! Sorry - it's my warped sense of humour!

And ... agreed Camphorvan - Mrs Fripp is indeed still a babe!

She certainly did. That's personally the way I remember Toyah. I wonder if Sylvian and Fripp ever went out to dinner with their wives, and if so, what they talked about...
