There was some less than complimentary references to Japan by musicians in Smash hits. Gary Kemp said he fell asleep listening to Canton and Morrisey said perhaps if we pour red hot coal on David Sylvian's head he might actually feel something. Meanwhile also in smash hits got a plaudit however from Peter Gabriel circa 1986 who said "plodders" like David Sylvian and Kate Bush -(who only released albums every few years) did the best work in his opinion.

Smash Hits tended to like David Sylvian championing his solo work long after his withdrawal from the pop world and in spite of his obvious subsequent unsuitability to the smash hits readership. Meanwhile Neil Tennant in an interview boasted that The pet shop boys got "the David Sylvian crossover audience".

When Tears For Fears were promoting their second album they described their first (The Hurting) as "being on Planet Sylvian", which I took to be 'arty'.

I believe Tricky once referred to Sylvian/Japan as a great influence. If I recall correctly, he mentioned Ghosts and wouldn't at all be surprised if such a track greatly contributed towards the Trip-Hop sound.

It seems David Byrne (Talking Heads) is a 'bit' of a Sylvian fan...in a round-about, back-handed compliment sort of way.... This is from the "radio" section of his website, where he puts a monthly radio playlist together.

I made a playlist on my computer with the title Art Pop. In it I put stuff that was a little too "out," even for my taste in pop songs. Categories are silly and arbitrary, but we all make them.
