Voices raised in welcome...

Postby Korean John on Tue Aug 07, 2007 12:42 am

Hello there,

I was wondering if anybody could help me.

To start with, I bought Oil on Canvas with the money I got for my 12th birthday and 20+ years on, it is as good as ever.

When I was 12, I'm pretty sure that I didn't think much of 'voices raised in welcome, hands held in prayer' or 'temple of dawn' but now these tunes sound beautiful.

Could anybody recommend some music that is similar to these instrumentals? I would love to explore a little.

Thanks
Korean John

Hello!

I think you would enjoy David's "Alchemy: An Index of Possibilities."

Seconded. Also you might want to pick up Camphor. It came out a couple years after Everything and Nothing as sort of the ambient/instrumental version of it. Lots of good remixes and some new unreleased tracks.

Tracks are:

All Of My Mother's Names
Red Earth (as Summertime ends)
Answered Prayers
The Song Which Gives the Key to Perfection
New Moon at Red Deer Wallow
Praise
Wave (version)
Mother And Child (remix)
Plight (version)
Upon This Earth
Big Wheels in Shanty Town
The Healing Place
Camphor
A Brief Conversation Ending in Divorce
Mutability
-----
Plight
Mutability
Premonition

Approaching Silence might also be of interest to you. 3 installation peices - two for Ember Glance and the other (title track) was for Redemption. Very lovely pieces.

beekeepers Apprentice
Epiphany
Approaching Silence.

Gone to Earth has some great instrumentals throughout the second half.
You could also check out his two releases with Holdger Czukay -
Plight and Premonition and Flux and Mutability.

Enjoy!

yeah go with Proggrrl there - she just pretty much summed up every DS instrumental there is :-D

anyway if you are looking for something in the same vein as the two tracks you mentioned the two collaborations with Holdger Czukay -
Plight and Premonition and Flux and Mutability are least likely to appeal to you (theu never did it for me personally but I havent heard them in at least a decade - so who nkows, I might like it now)

welcome here

& cheers

Since Temple of Dawn was written and performed by Richard, and Voices was written by David and Steve, you might want to check out some of the Jansen/Barbieri collaborative albums like Stone to Flesh, Changing Hands and Other Worlds in a Small Room - mostly instrumentals, some vocals provided by Steve. The JBK albums are good too.

Happy listening!

Hiya Korean John and welcome! :D

Camphor's a good suggestion... I love the mix of Wave on there.

No post of mine would be complete without me saying how talented Richard Barbieri is... ...so why not check out his solo album, Things Buried? The cover looks a little like my avatar

I might also recommend Harold Budd... I particularly enjoy this cd 'The Room'. I second the other ds instrumentals particularly those of the 2nd part of the Gone To Earth cd.

Agreed! Orphidice's "Love is Alive" is a top-notch ambient album in the Sylvian/Eno vein.
