Great interview Heart - sorry it's taken me such a while to read it - Im a very slow reader. Heh. I think the Roxy comparison was flabby lazy journalism. Japan, like Roxy were originals...and just because someone wears a suit, has a slightly wobbly voice, and half closes their eyes when they croon doesnt make them a Ferry clone. Pah.

Thanks for the exerpts. That was very enlightening, really. Glad to hear they were just regular guys from time to time---you can get all caught up in the artsy personas and forget sometimes they are just people, talented people at that!!!!

I am rather shy as well.... I'm very uncomfortable in groups of people... feel very out of place really. I don't need a lot of other people to entertain me or be involved with. In fact I prefer being at home for the most part. When I was younger it was actually physically painful for me to do many things because of my shyness. I think I'm more of what would be called reserved now... unless i'm amongst friends. I wonder if perhaps that is how david is as well....

I think there's something very appealing about shy men. I'm not shy at all although I have calmed down quite a bit over the years but yeah....I was a wild one at one time :smt026 :smt119 .

Here's, my honest opinion...do not take offense:

Brian Ferry ain't got nothing on David Sylvian! ROXY MUSIC is so tragically overrated it makes me sick! David Sylvian's singing style is much better, and JAPAN's all around tunes are better and more catchy than anything I've heard out of ROXY MUSIC.

Once again, no offense directed towards fans of Brian Ferry or ROXY MUSIC.

Hello all. Straight in here. I think the Roxy similarity has always been overstated. I remember when Japan came out asking my brother are they like Duran Duran and he replied "no they're slick like roxy music". But when I heard Tin Drum I throught they're nothing like Roxy music. And yes i always disagreed that David's singing sounded like Brian Ferry. My friend said David Sylvian sounded like Brian ferry in particular on Still life in mobile homes. I still couldn't agree. Maybe they were very broadly the same style but their voices didn't sound alike.

Weren't Japan also called 'second-rate New York Dolls' too?

Yep. Just like we have been saying, the critics are too quick to lump them together in the same bin as sounding like "someone else" when actually the critics don't have balls enough to say they are original and/or taking their own direction.

That compariosn was based on image alone. I can't help but think that no one was actually listening to Adolescent Sex when it came out, all it would take is one listen to tell that the NY Dolls, and Japan sounded NOTHING alike.

Yes, I listened to AS this afternoon and I agree, I cant find anything on there that would be comparable with NYDolls, not one single track sounds anything like ... as someone else has said it's really lazy journalism from someone who just couldn't be bothered to listen to the album properly and just took one glance at the artwork/photos on the cover and assumed that as they looked like the NYDolls they must sound like them too. The journalists who made those comparisons, along with those who churned out the old "Sylvian mimics Ferry" or "Sylvian impersonates Bowie" rubbish, probably have brain cells that were never troubled by an original thought in their lives.
