Just a question to those who ordered this... Has anyone received their actual vinyl copy yet? My order status at DMG/Samadhi Sound just says "shipping".

after the bullfight wrote:I might be able to shed a little light on this. I visited the Phil Collins exhibition in Cologne, that was mentioned on another thread. There were a number of old style listening booths arranged with a view over the main railway bridge, with 7" singles of lots of fraught conversations juxtaposed with Scritti Politti and a number of artists I've not heard of and David's new single. On hearing the track a number of times in a short space of time, I would say the Jacqueline comparison was apt. I was also reminded of the more minimalist RTC tracks. Very melodic and the lyrics offer a number of throwbacks to old references. I personally thought his voice sounded rather different - maybe just a little older. I've attempted a rough transcript (my apologies, it was from an iPhone recording, the brackets are where I've made a phonetic guess).

If you think you knew me then
You don’t know me now
As the ground grows up to meet me
I kissed your mouth

You were your border
Like an ….
But I turned you out

And if that brought us to our knees
We left all the way down
I brought my Daddy’s ring from my hand
And I made a bride

We grew a flower in the desert
We got terrified
We were one, and one and the same
Something was lost somehow

And if you think you knew me then
You don’t know me now

The heavens high above you
(Spawning) houses of their own
You were dropped
And hit the ground running
But they failed to lead you home

And if you think you knew me then
You don’t know me now

I grew a child inside of you
Just (like) myself
I stole the face of joy
A perfume of words

I had admired the boy within
Before he cut himself
You found the blood
Upon my clothes

And if you think you knew me then
You don’t know me now

There were children in the classroom
(Wretched) without a name
There were hornets in the heads of cattle
(upgraded?) to the sun

You cried wolf
I tracked one down
And lived with it
There were lambs
Sure there was blood
There were psalms to sing

You could just see the bone jut out
Penetrate the skin
Did it (inspire) beyond all that
The mess we’re in

(You swished your hair)
I stared you down
You still run around

And if you think you knew me then
You don’t know me now

I was happy, satiated
I was satisfied.

David seems to be in an endless conversation with Ingrid. it must have been one hell of a breakup.
The last verse of World Citizen tells me so.

I took my time, I listened, listened, and listened again, and now I'm ready to say that this single is huge, a landmark in David's career and in musical history.

Are you being cynical, IITW?
If not, please elaborate...why a landmark?

I am absolutely not being cynical, nor ironical.
I think this single is a landmark because both songs are as close to perfection as I could wish a great song to be.
And I believe it is greatly important in David's own history because, to me, it sounds like he has managed to blend his first quality craftsmanship as a songwriter with his need to seek new musical directions, in a way that he can be proud of and follow on from here.

It's more complicated than this, but I tried to keep it comprehensible. I hope. :P

Really like the track and am anxiously awaiting my vinyl copy, but...landmark in music history...um, I don't think so. It's a good track..very good in fact...but there isn't anything at all groundbreaking or majorly unique about it...reminds me of Darkest Dreaming a bit...with his modern fx thrown in for good measure. I see your point though about how it brings back the guitar based song structure a bit and mixes that with the Blemish era electronics. I agree that it's a promising direction.

I think the track is absolutely beautiful. A stunning hybrid, as IITW points out. In some respects it brings back to me a sense of Secrets of the Beehive (melody, warmth, structure), but with a far grander sparseness in the musical backing which evokes the pinnacle of his ambient instrumental works (and collaborations). And it all feels "complete", whereas I find his other recent songs (Jacqueline, Certain Slant, Gravity etc.) sound more like sketches.

It certainly has a quality which could make it a significant work in David's career path. At the very least I hope this isn't just a one-off, and that we might be fortunate enough to hear a larger body of work in this vein.

The vinyl has arrived at last! It is a beautifully crafted release indeed. Music aside, the quality is truly amazing - the slightly textured paper, the inks used, and really gorgeous white disc! A true gem. I took a couple of pictures of it:

It is a lovely package. With all the copies being signed it may be that people's deliveries are at different times because David is fitting in doing the autographs between other things. My package was sent from London and I'm in London so it came within 24 hours of it being mailed.

I received mine (in Switzerland) last week Thursday... Well packaged, love the weight of the white vinyl disc, as well as the neat signature in the corresponding area. Great to see one of his Glowing enigma self portraits on the front cover!
