When we return ...

What do people think of this piece?
Personally I really like it, apart from the part half way through where
I think I hear someone letting the air out of a blow-up doll.

 Ha! That would most likely be Arve Henriksen - not your average trumpeter to say the least. Some of his other notable contributions to the piece include merely blowing air through the trumpet ala Franz Hautzinger, some whispered dialogue through the trumpet and brief moments of playing which is similar to Jon Hassell's high pitched style.
For the most part, I enjoy the atmosphere of the track...except for maybe those few annoying nursery rhyme-like notes that John Butcher chooses to dabble with around the six minute mark. I believe he does something similar later on in the piece.
I should be honest and mention that I expected a bit more prominence on the part of the string sextet at some point during the piece, so there was a mild disappointment on my part - but that was due more to preconceptions I held more than what is contained within the piece.

What I am impressed most about these electro-acoustic improvisors would have to be how they are determined to work together communally - no one player takes the obvious lead or feels the urge to dominate. This may actually be a strong reason behind why some listeners have a troubling time with what is played, because there is no consistent sound taking the forefront that one can focus on. Of course, the music is also minimalistic and performed in an avant garde manner with no regard for measured tempo, so that possibly comes into play as well. But this socialistic style of interplay may be what really throws some listeners off...perhaps? :?
