A Certain Slant of Light

Postby Hawk on Fri Jun 11, 2010 3:19 pm

I can't see a topic about this yet... New up on davidsylvian.com there is a free download for 'A Certain Slant of Light,' David's recording of the Emily Dickinson poem.

The piece is soft and simple yet incredibly beautiful. And peaceful. I don't want to over-describe it. I just love it.

Does anyone know the when why and how of this? Is there an interview I've missed?

Very kind of DS to share what seems like a very unedited piece.

Thanks

I would gather (because I've only seen this through emails from the Pioneers group, not looked at the site myself - been doing my tax return - but anyway...) that it forms part of DS' raising of awareness of MK through his site. Am I right everyone? (Tax returns are a ballache y'know...)

I wonder why it is coupled with the (lets be honest) welcome acknowledgement of the MKA?

That's really gorgeous. Must be ear candy (and far too short) for those who long for the 80s period, it definitely recalls melodic lines from those days.

I would truly welcome a minimalist, song-based acoustic album along these lines from Sylvian.

Hope you`re right Natasha, but when alls said and done, a simple phone call between two old friends, would cut thru any ambiguities.

I'm with Paul on this - I think it's a very considerate gesture, while poignantly and poetically understated.

Yes - it's really beautiful and poignant - seems to have a meaning or feeling to it than you can sense but I for one can't quite grasp...darkness and hope maybe...

It's definitely linked, if you rightclick the properties of the mp3 the Mick Karn link is embedded within it!

Actually the more I think on it, the more it seems an incredibly fitting response...it is becoming almost impossible to listen to it without being deeply moved...

Lovely. Despite what David says, there is a place for songs in the world...the old forms are still with us because they work. All you need is a guitar, a voice and a great melody. A beauty. Thanks David.
