Thank you so much for the upload! I find it hard to describe my thoughts - he is such a pleasure to listen to - you can hear he is always thinking. His voice is a bit like how he describes lyrics - on one level there are the words he is saying and on another level there is the sound of his voice, both creating varying effects on my mind if I choose to listen to one or the other, but probably most impressive when they are both heard together...
I liked the way the interviewer really allowed David to open up - she sounded almost as calm as he was - at one point I thought I was listening to a therapy session! It sounded like she had listened to the album quite recently and was genuinely interested in what David had to say. As a listener, I much prefer these types of 'conversation-like' interviews, allowing the interviewee to divulge or digress as much as they want, rather than a quick, restrictive Q & A.
From every interview, I have new thoughts and realisations about Manafon. I feel like I have been on a short part of the journey already and I haven't even heard the album yet!! But it feels like scouting around the reward in order to know, whether entirely or partly, what it is I am going to find there. I feel quite cautious about approaching Manafon with the right mindset because I really want to enjoy and appreciate it. David has put so much into it...so many twists, pulses, aches, reflections, opposites, internals, and personalities...all so indirectly - like hidden behind the concepts of improvisation, RS Thomas, the poet, the recluse and their stories... Again, I can't describe it but this is making a deep part of my mind so very excited!
