Pronunciation of "Manafon"

Postby Slope on Tue Sep 22, 2009 3:57 pm

It just dawned on me that most people in most territories will pronounce David's new album title as "Man-af-on" - but having had the benefit of being brought up in Wales until my mid-teens, I though I'd share that the correct (or at least the Welsh) pronunciation of the name of the town is: "Man-ar-von".

Just sharing! :smt006

Back to normal programming. :-D

Interesting to know. Thanks for sharing, Slope. :-)

Has Big Dave pronounced it himself in any audio interviews? Would be interesting to know how he says it. I do know that he refers to a previous album as Dead Boyos On A Cake, so I'm leaning towards this new pronunciation.

Just listening to the Late Junction interview on BBC Radio 3 mentioned in another thread; he doesn't say it correctly (and as a Welshman I feel qualified to back up what Slope said)...David says Manaphon..like Telaphon or something...not man-ahhh-Von in the Welsh...

Not that it matters....but you know, details Dave, details! F = V in Welsh.

The pronunciation hadn't even crossed my mind ( shame on me!) so thanks Slope for pointing that out. I actually think that it sounds better in Welsh (unusual for me ... very unusual for me ...)

it's a quote from BBC sitcom Bottom, where Eddie says something in French and Richie says 'Oh Christ he's gone all Welsh on me again; have you got any more exploding carrots?!'
so. But I guess you need to have seen it for it to make sense (and be funny...)

I disagree. OK I only lived in Pwllheli for two years but I picked up enough Welsh to know that it's pronounced 'Man-AV-on' with 'AV' rhyming with 'have'. If it were indeed 'Man-ar-von' then it would be spelt 'Manarfon'.

If our David himself pronounces his album [–Manaphon–] then I guess we all should.

Yeah, I tend to agree Chet, if DS wants to pronounce his new album that way then that's how we should pronounce it too. :D
