Manafon - Sylvian's masterpiece

Postby Simonp on Wed Aug 26, 2009 2:59 pm

Tonight I listened to Manafon in its entirety through headphones and can only conclude its a masterpiece. Its such a beautiful work. I was terrified this record would mark the end of my love affair with his music but its done the opposite. Its made me respect the guy even more than I did before. I hated Blemish but I adore this and I'm sure everyone on the forum will too.

well I for one am very interested to hear it. amazing that you didn't like blemish but you do this as they sound so alike to me. I've only heard the 30 sec snippets though, so you are giving me hope that there is more to this work than what meets the ear in 30 sec. I'm excited! :D

Manafon is right up there next to Brilliant Trees and Secrets of the Beehive.
I guess this is exactly what David wanted to do since creating Ghosts 28 years ago.

From what I've heard so far of the samplers, the melodies that are created by the vocal lines remind me of ancient Celtic folk songs: lovely, haunting, majestic and timeless - but given a slightly horror movie twist with the slightly macabre aspect of the musical accompaniment. Very interesting - the overall effect is reminiscent of the strange atmosphere created in the ancient folk lore of children's fairy tales tales like Little Red riding Hood, Snow White, Hansel and Gretal etc....innocence lying directly alongside threatening violence...good juxtaposed with evil. I am SO looking forward to hearing the album in it's entirety....might even have been convinced by these samplers to go for the deluxe edition....hmm...where's my credit card!

That's got me thinking about David in a kilt, bouncing about to the rhythm of a bagpipe... :D

That is too much! You know Neonico is very sensitive to images like this and she will have a bloody stroke. (if she gets lucky with Sylvian.. ;-)

Hmm... I have a faint suspicion that Neonico is not alone...
