What I don't want from Sylvian...

From Brilliant Trees through Died In The Wool...

Postby Silver Moon on Thu Jul 17, 2008 2:00 pm

I didn't say either one wasn't great by themselves! I just noticed Heart was mentioning who she would imagine him collaborating with... I thought Mark Hollis would always be an interesting match. I know it would probably never happen anyway. I didn't mean sing together, but perhaps just write music together.

No it's ok! I just wanted to explain why I chose Mark Hollis and to explain it a bit more.

No hard feelings!

Like Neonio said: expressing his state of mind in this point in time.
That's what interest me, so no instrumentals for me at this moment.
His songs are wellpacked presents, some layers to undo, after more listening I like Blemish now.

Surely Hollis is down to composing music with only one note by now - surely he can pick that one note on his own.

Haha, funny you say that! A long time ago before I liked Mark Hollis or even knew who he was my dad would play his solo album all the time in the car, the house, everywhere.... I'd say "Dad! Why do you always have to play this depressing stuff!" He'd say "It's Mark Hollis! He's a genius! He wrote every single note on this record!" and I'd say "Yeah... All 4 of them!"

Apparently that is all he needed to make an amazing album. :)

Indeed - some people can do a lot with a little. :) On the topic of what I don't want from Sylvian would be a repeat of anything he's done before. Not a SBS Mark II, not a Blemish Mark II, not even a SOTB Mark II. Tho I wouldn't mind if he did a repeat of an American (or other accessible location) tour. :D

Seriously - the man has enough talent and ideas to do and create the music that is close to his soul. I prefer the albums that come from his heart - even tho they tend to get me over-emotional, it's still great music. His albums have a natural progression and they really show where he is musically and sometimes even spiritually. I guess it's a bit like "I want to know what he has to say now".

Absolutely agree. Not only what he has to say, but how he will choose to express it.

Talking about collaborative singing, I thought one of the pleasant surprises of NH was the choral background singers on Atom and Cell and Banality of Evil. I felt it really worked beautifully, and would love to hear more of this.

A whole album of this!!! All vocals, minimal instrumentation.

Yes, I would agree. I thought that tracks like Serotonin, The Day The Earth Stole Heaven and Money For All benefited highly as well from the contributions of the backing vocalists. They helped to add a greater sense of melody that Sylvian seems somewhat reluctant to attempt.

I, too, liked the choral arrangement on SBS very much. I wonder if the parts were written, or if the singers themselves (Sylvian included or not) improvised them along.

I would not want Sylvian to get bogged down in his usual 'life is hard' mental space. I've always thought Dead Bees, while for me unquestionably his least-focused album/period, was a wonderful attempt to shed some really troublesome ballast that found its way e.g. onto the Zazou tracks, and try and find a new levity of sorts. It would be really nice if, in the case of the forthcoming album, an increased formal experimentalism would carry a rejuvenated and positive 'outlook on life'.

Structurally ultra-modernist + vocally and expressively close to the spirit of folksong: now that is a wonderful proposition for me..
