Sylvian's greatest work

Postby Simonp on Mon Jun 30, 2008 1:06 am

We haven't had a poll in a while so I thought I'd ask the question...what is Sylvian's greatest recorded work. This poll focuses on his song albums as opposed to his instrumental work.

I voted SOTB, but it's a bit academic. It totally depends what mood I'm in.

SBS - I mean this is just such an advanced sound for him. Blemish is such a personal album and a bit hard to listen to again and again. I also love dboc and sotbh... love brilliant trees as well. It really does depend upon my mood which i'm most attracted to at any given moment.

Did we not forget E&N on the list?? I mean even though it was remakes of many songs they were "remastered" and rerecorded as he would have originally liked to to them.... so can't this count as a new cd as well?

I guess we could have included Everything & Nothing but I suppose I was going for complete albums not compilations with this poll.

I voted for Snow Borne Sorrow. It's almost a perfect album except for A History Of Holes which is a little too MOR for my tastes.

BT. Also depends on my mood, but if I were to buy somebody who had never heard him before an album, I would start with this one. I still remember what a revelation it was when it came out. I had been into Japan for probably about two years at that point, and his new direction, as I have said elsewhere, took me to another place that I have never left.

I know what you mean about BT, natsume. It blew me away, too, when it came out.

I love "A History of Holes" - I'm not sure how much of that is the startlingly frank lyrics, though. SBS as a whole I really, really like, but I do find it a tad overproduced, so I can also see where the MOR comment is coming from.
